General Information

Unit Synopsis

As the first unit of the intermediate second year level in this series, you will continue the systematic progression of the ideas and expressive practicum in the realisation of theatre performance, by undertaking more complex activities according to your specialisation in either Music Theatre , Drama or Technical Theatre. If you are in the Music Theatre specialisation, you will concentrate on synthesising the three areas of acting, music and dance, in exercises designed to establish the basics of harnessing and focusing your expressive ability through self-awareness and examining the concept of 'choice'. If you are in the Drama specialisation, you will concentrate on synthesising the three areas of acting, voice and movement, in exercises designed to establish the basics of harnessing and focusing your expressive ability through self-awareness and examining the concept of 'choice'. If you are in the Technical Theatre specialisation you will explore stage lighting from the standpoint of aesthetics as well as the practical execution of the design concept.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

  2. Perform accurately and musically the vocal scales, technical exercises and songs set for this unit
  3. Perform set dance combinations of increasing complexity in in contrasting styles, relevant to music theatre, as set for this unit.
  4. Apply intermediate level theatre skills, theatre craft and dramatic expression to various drama tasks set for this unit
  5. Apply intermediate level principles of breath usage, support and placement of the voice to various performance exercises set for this unit.
  6. Apply intermediate levels of strength and flexibility in expressive movement to various performance
  7. Execute and critically analyse the production projects and technical tasks set for this unit
  8. Apply your knowledge of lighting design and operations to various production tasks set for this unit
  9. Critically reflect on your performance practice and artistic development

Learning outcomes 1 - 3 apply to students in the Music Theatre specialisation. Learning outcomes 4 - 6 apply to students in the Drama specialisation. Learning outcomes 7 - 8 apply to students in the Technical Theatre specialisation. Learning outcome 9 applies to all students enrolled in this unit.
