Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50113)

Course summary

Advance your career in the Early Childhood industry with a Diploma Qualification. This will equip you with the essential skills required for a roll in a range of early childhood education settings. Upon completing your Diploma, you will be equipped to work as an Early Childhood Educator. As a graduate of this course you may choose to undertake additional studies and enrol in a Bachelor of Education, where you will gain credit for your Diploma.

Standard Course Entry Requirements 

There are no entry requirements for this course. 

Bridging Teacher Entry Requirements

Teachers are eligible to enrol in the customised course structure if they:

  • hold a Primary Teaching qualification with a focus on children aged 5 to 8 years old (eg qualification with focus on children aged 3 to 8 or 5 to 12)  A prerequisite competency will apply to students who have graduated prior to 1990.
  • hold current teacher registration. (Qualifications that are specifically for middle and secondary school aged children are not acceptable)
  • a current First Aid Certificate with the code HLTAID004 is required which may be obtained during study

Documents required for Bridging Teacher entry

JP certified copies of the following documents are required to verify eligibility to enrol and are to be submitted to Pauline Keene at p.keene@cqu.edu.au before enrolment can continue:

  • Proof of teacher registration
  • Primary teaching qualification(s)
  • Marriage certificate or similar (if necessary)

Please note - qualifications which are specifically for middle and secondary school aged children are not acceptable.

Course Structure - Continuing Students

Summary
This is the Course Structure for students who were admitted to their course before January 2017 and have not received a transition plan. 

Students may want to transition to the New Students Course Structure to access online resources instead of hard-copy resources. To transition to the New Students Course Structure, a transition plan must be discussed with teachers prior to enrolment.

Summary
Students who are registered Primary School teachers who wish to work within the early childhood sector can study a customised to complete a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Summary

This course is available to study on-campus at the following locations: 

CQUniversity Gladstone
Classes will commence on Thursday, 8 February 2018 and will be held fortnightly on Thursdays at LZB Training Room 4 from 9 am – 3 pm.

CQUniversity Mackay City
Classes will commence on Wednesday, 7 February 2018 and will be held on Wednesdays at Building 003, Floor 1, Room 11 from 9 am – 3 pm.

CQUniversity Rockhampton North
Classes will commence on Thursday, 8 February 2018 and will be held on Thursdays from 9 am – 3 pm.

Students must allow 22 hours per week for study and placement.

There are eleven course intakes for 2018, available monthly from January to November.

Summary

This course is available online with teaching support available through email and telephone. Online students require self-motivation and must have 22 hours per week available for study and placement. 

Optional tutorial sessions are held weekly through Zoom meetings each Monday evenings from 6 pm – 8 pm.

Additional, optional on-campus workshops are scheduled throughout the year and will be held for a total of 4 hours per week. Further details about optional on-campus workshops will be provided by teaching staff after enrolment. Workshops will be available at CQUniversity Rockhampton, CQUniversity Mackay and CQUniversity Gladstone.

Practical Placement Information

Each unit in this course has a practical component. Students who are not already working in a regulated education and care service for example Kindergarten or Long Day Care centre must organise a voluntary work placement. Students who are already employed in a regulated education and care service, can use their existing work to fulfill practical requirements. 

All students will need to complete third party reports, practical assessment, and a vocational placement logbook. These observations and reports will need to be signed off by a qualified supervisor with at a minimum, the same level qualification. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 240 hours of placement throughout the duration of the course.

Students not currently working in the industry will need to organise a placement in consultation with teaching staff.

Is what I already know taken into account?

Yes. Your history of study, skills and experience does matter. Consideration is given to your prior life and work experiences as well as formal and informal training. This may be applied using the national standard for Mutual Recognition or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Documentary evidence will be requested.
