Course Summary

iChange is designed for you as a pre-entry social innovation experience before you land on campus or by distance for your first course at CQUniversity. This online Short Course provides you with a basic understanding of social innovation, and you will learn of the behaviours and traits required to implement and sustain social innovation, as well as the practical tools you can use to start the social innovation process. Importantly you will learn how to apply social innovation from a discipline and career perspective.

iChange is geared to orienting you towards the University’s social innovation values and actvities, beginning your journey towards attaining the Graduate Attribute of a Social Innovation Mindset.

The Course’s Welcome unit and six themed interactive units introduce you to social innovation basics:

1. History of Social Innovation

2. Types of Social Innovation

3. Megatrends and Wicked Problems

4. Exploring Social Innovation Opportunities

5. Who Does Social Innovation?

6. Why Me?

These units explore the applied philosophy and principles of social innovation utilising video animation and interviews to present historical and contemporary issues, introducing you to the behaviours, tools and techniques used to drive social innovation and social impact in response to emerging megatrends and wicked problems.

Importantly the Course seeks to guide you towards greater self-awareness of the role you will play in social innovation.

Underpinning the Course is content that outlines the University’s core commitment to social innovation and its Ashoka U Changemaker Campus status.

Upon completing iChange you will receive a signed certificate.

There is no fee associated with this short course.

iChange introduces you to the opportunities and potential to apply social innovation approaches within your chosen professional discipline.  In a world where government, corporate, entrepreneurship and not-for-profit sectors are increasingly moving toward purposeful outcomes and are demanding people who can drive this transition, iChange provides you with a toolkit of knowledge and approaches that can be applied to drive sustainable social impact.  Tools such as Human Centred Design, Mind Mapping and Collaborative Practice are introduced to enable you to challenge wicked problems and identify the impact of current and emerging megatrends.  These elements will combine with further curricular and extracurricular activities to assist you in achieving a Social Innovation Mindset, impact in your local community, and through your career.

Course Structures

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.

Course Structure 1

iChange is self-driven and structured around an introductory unit followed by six sequential themed units.  The Course will take an estimated 12 hours to complete, roughly 2 hours per unit.  Content delivery per unit is roughly 15 mins of video and/or animation, followed by either a reflection, challenge or discussion activity related to the unit content.  Each unit will require you to successfully pass a quiz which then articulates you sequentially onto the next unit.  There will also be opportunities for you to upload reflections or reports highlighting your progress and activities.  In addition, iChange comses with its own Toolkit containing a section of suggested readings or podcasts that are aligned with the relevant unit content.
