Course Summary

Learn basic skills and knowledge in a range of activities and functions required in hospitality. Work would be undertaken in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops. This program can be completed as part of a traineeship. This qualification reflects the role of individuals who use a defined and limited range of hospitality operational skills. They are involved in mainly routine and repetitive tasks using practical skills and basic industry knowledge. They work under direct supervision.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

1. Students will receive a Result of Assessment within 21 days of completion of each unit/module or within 21 days of the ‘close of study’ date.
2. Students who successfully complete all required units/modules will receive their qualification and an Academic Statement itemising all units/modules successfully completed.
3. Following receipt of written advice from the student (or teacher) that the student does not intend to complete the full course, the student will be issued with a Statement of Attainment listing all units/modules successfully completed.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in various hospitality settings, such as restaurants, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops. Possible job titles include a bar attendant, café attendant, catering assistant, food and beverage attendant, front office assistant, porter, room attendant.

There are six course intakes for 2018, available monthly from February to July.

This course is available to study on-campus at the following locations:

CQUniversity Mackay City

Classes commence from Monday, 29 January 2018 and will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8.30 – 3 pm each day at the Fifth Floor Training Restaurant.

CQUniversity Rockhampton City

Classes commence from Monday, 29 January 2018 and will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8.30 am – 3 pm each day at Willby’s Training Restaurant.

Optional extra time available each class day to use on-campus facilities from 3 pm – 4.30 pm.

VET in Schools (VETiS)

There are six course intakes for 2018, available February, March, June, July, August and October.

On-campus 
This course is available to study on-campus, through the VET in Schools program at the following campuses: 

CQUniversity Gladstone Marina
Classes commence from Thursday, 8 February 2018 and will be held on Thursdays each week from 8.30 am – 3 pm at Martin Hanson Building.

CQUniversity Mackay City
Classes commence from Monday, 5 February 2018 and will be held on Mondays each week from 8.30 am – 3 pm at Fifth Floor Training Restaurant. 

CQUniversity Rockhampton City
Classes commence from Wednesday, 7 February 2018 and will be held on Wednesdays each week from 8.30 am – 3 pm at Willby’s Training Restaurant.

On-campus classes won’t be scheduled through Queensland State School holiday period and Queensland public holidays. Students are required to complete additional study in their own time to complete online assessment requirements.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative

Community organisations successful in their application with the Queensland Government have access to the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. This funding can assist students, who meet the eligibility criteria, apply for a place in their community organisation’s project. Further information about the initiative can be found at https://training.qld.gov.au/home/sqw


The following community organisations have a partnership agreement in place with CQUni, as the preferred Registered Training Organisation. This partnership gives these organisations the ability to recruit students within their community who meet the eligibility criteria set by the Department of Education and Training, and send through documentation to enable CQUni to process the pre-enrolments.

Practical Skills Additional Information

Practical skills will need to be demonstrated in the hospitality industry or simulated Training environments at CQUniversity Mackay City or CQUniversity Rockhampton City. 


Students not currently working in the industry, or who don’t have access to workplace simulated environments will need to organise this in consultation with teaching staff.


SITHIND003 - Use hospitality skills effectively requires evidence of a minimum of 12 service periods (shifts). Each service period is to be recorded in a service logbook, clearly numbered and dated. Service logbooks will be provided by teaching staff after enrolment.


Uniform Requirements

All students are required to wear a uniform for this course.


  • Black skirt or pants (not jeans) must be worn on restaurant operation days.
  • Black enclosed dress shoes are mandatory when working in the restaurant. 
  • Covered footwear is required on campus at all times. 

Rockhampton students are required to purchase a 'Willby's Training Restaurant' polo shirt from the CQU Bookshop phone 07 4930 9421 on North Side Campus.


Mackay students are required to purchase a black “Hospitality Polo” from the CQUniversity Mackay Bookshop. The teachers will supply students with a sizing chart on the first day of class. 


VETiS Dual Qualification

VETiS students can choose to complete a dual qualification from two of the three qualifications listed below. The two courses will be completed over a period of two years:


  • SIT20316 - Certificate II in Hospitality
  • SIT20416 - Certificate II in Kitchen Operations
  • SIT20116 - Certificate II in Tourism
