Course Summary

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have a range of well-developed hospitality service, sales or operational skills and sound knowledge of industry operations. Using discretion and judgement, they work with some independence and under limited supervision using plans, policies and procedures to guide work activities. This qualification provides a pathway to work in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops. This qualification allows for multiskilling and for specialisation in accommodation services, food and beverage and gaming.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

1. Students will receive a Result of Assessment within 21 days of completion of each unit/module or within 21 days of the ‘close of study’ date.
2. Students who successfully complete all required units/modules will receive their qualification and an Academic Statement itemising all units/modules successfully completed.
3. Following receipt of written advice from the student (or teacher) that the student does not intend to complete the full course, the student will be issued with a Statement of Attainment listing all units/modules successfully completed.

Possible job titles include an espresso coffee machine operator, food and beverage attendant, front desk receptionist, front office assistant, function attendant, function host, gaming attendant, guest service agent, housekeeper, restaurant host, senior bar attendant, waiter.

CQUniversity Rockhampton City

Classes commence from Monday, 29 January 2018 and will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8.30 – 3 pm each day at Willby's Training Restaurant.

Optional extra time available each class day to use on-campus facilities from 3 pm – 4.30 pm.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative

Community organisations successful in their application with the Queensland Government have access to the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. This funding can assist students, who meet the eligibility criteria, apply for a place in their community organisation’s project. Further information about the initiative can be found at https://training.qld.gov.au/home/sqw


The following community organisations have a partnership agreement in place with CQUni, as the preferred Registered Training Organisation. This partnership gives these organisations the ability to recruit students within their community who meet the eligibility criteria set by the Department of Education and Training, and send through documentation to enable CQUni to process the pre-enrolments. 


They are:

Students currently studying or wanting to enquire about eligibility with the funding or for this course can contact the community organisation.


Resource Requirements

All students are required to wear a uniform for this course.


  • Black skirt or pants (not jeans) must be worn on restaurant operation days.
  • Black enclosed dress shoes are mandatory when working in the restaurant. 
  • Covered footwear is required on campus at all times. 
  • Rockhampton students are required to purchase a 'Willby's Training Restaurant' polo shirt from the CQU Bookshop phone 07 4930 9421 on North Side Campus.
  • Mackay students are required to purchase a black “Hospitality Polo” from the CQUniversity Mackay Bookshop. The teachers will supply students with a sizing chart on the first day of class. 


Practical Placement Information

SITHIND004 Work effectively in hospitality service requires evidence of a minimum of 36 service periods (shifts). The services can be completed at the CQUniversity Training Restaurants at Mackay City campus and/or Rockhampton City campus, in a food and beverage establishment that students may already work at, or at one of the one off functions that meet the Assessment Guidelines of this unit.


Each service period or shift is to be recorded in a log book, clearly numbered and dated on at least 36 occasions. Students will receive the logbook after the first restaurant service.
