General Information

Overview

Clinical Practice 3 provides you with your third block of practical experience with a chiropractic clinic. You will be expected to perform as a functional team member under minimal guidance of the clinic supervisors. You will build on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills learnt in the previous two clinical units of the course and will therefore be expected to demonstrate this increased knowledge and skill by contributing to patient assessment and treatment. You will be expected to actively contribute to clinical decision making be able to undertake many tasks independently. You must demonstrate a mastery level of knowledge and understanding of chiropractic procedures, processes and documentation and demonstrate compliance with Chiropractic Professional Competency Standards.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Perform an appropriate patient-centered clinical assessment, at a mastery level within a controlled clinical environment, under minimal supervision.
  2. Synthesize clinical data to generate a clinical impression including; differential diagnosis, appropriate working diagnosis and generation of appropriate treatment plan under minimal supervision.
  3. Identify the need for a patient to receive emergency care and/or referral to another health care professions, and to complete the appropriate course of care, under minimal supervision and feedback.
  4. Undertake health prevention and promotion principles to an individual patient's management plan, under minimal supervision/feedback.
  5. Have effective communication skills, including explaining a diagnosis and treatment plan to a patient, and producing written professional reports, under minimal clinical supervision.
  6. Behave in a way that is congruent with the duty of care of a primary contact health care practitioner and the elements of the chiropractic code of conduct, with minimal clinical supervision.

This unit is a specific immersion unit to assist the student to develop their individualised pathway towards strengthening the majority of elements and performance indicators of CCEA’s Accreditation Standards for areas considered ‘clinical interest’ as opposed to general practice. In total, this unit will address aspects of Unit 6 Patient Assessment, Unit 7 Diagnostic Decision Making, Unit 8 Planning of Patient Care, Unit 9 Implementation of Care, and Unit 3 Professional Interaction. There will be some elements addressed from Unit 10 Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and Unit 11 Professional Scientific Development.


The Learning Outcomes will be evident in continuing, supervised patient contact leading to participation in patient care.

Important announcement: COVID-19 vaccination is now compulsory for your course

Recently the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) released a statement outlining the mandatory vaccination of all workers and students in health care settings.

As a result of health jurisdictions implementing this recommendation nationally, CQUniversity must comply with this requirement.

I have got my first vaccination what do I do?

Upload this evidence to the Sonia placement system. WIL staff will be regularly checking to see whether students will be on track to receive their second dose by the due date.

What will happen if I do not receive my first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by the set date?

If you do not receive your first dose by the set date, in most situations it is likely that your placement will need to be cancelled this term if it is scheduled to occur before the date of your second dose, or if you are currently on placement, you will need to be withdrawn from the placement.

Please note that the WIL team will not renegotiate your placement date to fit around the date of your second dose. Students have been regularly informed in relation to developments within the healthcare industry and compulsory vaccination and have had adequate time to become fully vaccinated.

What will happen if I choose not to be vaccinated against COVID-19?

If you choose to not be vaccinated, please contact your Head of Course to discuss the implications this will have for course completion. If you don’t know how to contact your Head of Course, please call 13 27 86.

What if I have a temporary or permanent medical exemption?

All temporary or permanent medical exemptions must meet a narrow set of criteria and must be certified by a specialist or medical practitioner. In some jurisdictions this must also be approved by the Chief Medical Officer. If you believe that you are eligible to apply for a medical exemption, then this medical exemption must be completed by your specialist or medical practitioner and uploaded to the Sonia placement system prior to your deadline to receive the first dose.

This exemption will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and provided to the public health jurisdiction for their approval and direction. The result (whether approved or rejected) will be reviewed by the WIL Manager and Head of Course in relation to the impact to your course. If your exemption does not meet the set criteria or more information is needed, a WIL officer will contact you. If further evidence is required, this may impact any planned placements and your course completion, so please be aware of the importance of the timelines provided in this communication.

Am I eligible to receive a vaccination?

Yes, vaccinations are available and as a student in a health discipline you have been a priority group and eligible to receive a vaccination since earlier this year, as advised in various student communications throughout the year.

How can I access a vaccination?

You can access vaccinations by visiting the website of your state health department and following the instructions set out on the page. Most sites will allow you to make an appointment using their online system. You may also be able to book a vaccination appointment through local GPs and pharmacies in your area.

I am an international student can I access vaccinations?

Yes, international students can access vaccinations. Please check your state’s health department page for more information.

Task Description

Portfolio 50% A: Reflective Journal (30%), B:Clinical Competencies (Pass / Fail), C: In Class Activities - Pharmacology ICA (10%) / Rehab ICA (10%).


A. Clinical Competencies (pass/fail) Each competency will be assessed on a pass/fail (competent / not yet competent) basis, students must achieve 65% in each to be deemed competent. Competencies should be completed during the practical class or be recorded and submitted as a video. (NB. Technique competencies must be completed in class under supervision. Competencies should be completed on a regular / weekly basis). If students are not deemed competent or do not complete the listed summative competencies – they will be deemed to have failed this proportion of this assessment. Competencies can be attempted as many times as is possible, students are encouraged to try competencies as many times as possible and learn from the feedback provided. A list of the required competencies can be found on the Moodle page and in the unit introduction.


B. Reflective Journal (30%) Students must submit (2) TWO Reflective Concerns - concerns can be identified from any aspect of the unit or clinical placement and can be submitted via Mahara / Weebly or Word document. Reflection can be on any aspect of your course that you are having difficulty with, templates, lectures and recordings of what is expected by Masters Reflection are provided.


C. In Class Activities (20%) - Pharmacology 10% & Rehab 10% In class activities (ICA) are included in the pharmacology and practical stream of CP2 - 80% attendance / participation at the practical sessions is requested. Further details of these in class activity's will be made available on the Moodle page.

2 Professional Practice Placement

Assessment Title
Junior Clinic

Task Description

CQUniversity students have to complete 80hrs of Junior Clinic in CQUniversity Clinics facilities in Term 3 in order to familiarize themselves with the requirements involved in providing quality chiropractic services during their internship. Junior Clinic is a mandatory Placement in CQUni Health Clinics, participating students must adhere to the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) statement (dated 01/10/21) outlining the mandatory vaccination of all workers and students in health care settings. Students must comply with the statement in order to attend a placement in a healthcare setting, more information is available in the Term Specific Information section of this unit profile. Placement is a Pass/Fail assessment component and each student must complete the required 80 hours of Junior Clinic for CP3. Placement will be assessed on Professionalism (dress code, behavior and time keeping) by surveying the clinical supervisors. Completion of 80hrs and completion of all of the requirements on the Junior Clinic Checklist. The Junior Clinic Checklist and Junior Clinic log sheet of completed placement hours must signed a clinic supervisor and submitted by CoB Friday week 12.

3 Practical Assessment

Clinic Entrance

Task Description

Clinic Entrance is a 6 station (station examples below) Pass/Fail OSCE

It will be held in Week 7 and has a minimum pass mark of 65%.

6 station (15 minutes each) OSCE (Clinic Entrance Preparation - Weeks 1-4)

Moodle Quiz - Weighting: 50%, to be completed during the university exam week. This 2hr quiz will assess material from all streams of the unit, including understanding of the Clinic Education Manual.

Assessment Criteria

This assessment is to be online. The test will be comprised of a range of question formats, including multi choice, matching, short and long case answer explanations. This is a closed-book assessment and no notes, texts or additional electronic devices are allowed during this assessment task. You will have a 10 minute perusal time prior to the allotted writing time. You will submit your test electronically. This test must be written at the timetabled date and time. If you arrive late, you may enter the test room up to 15 minutes after the start of the test, however, you will still be required to submit your test at the standard test end time. You will not be allowed entry more than 15 minutes after the test starts. In the absence of an approved extension, there will be no opportunity for you to complete this assessment at a later time, and you will receive a mark of zero for the assessment.
