General Information

Overview

Drawing on your own experience, you will explore the concept of leadership, particularly how leadership styles impact an emergency and disaster management environment. You will differentiate between leadership and management in the strategic and crisis contexts unique to emergency and disaster management. Using examples specific to your experience, you will consider the challenges faced by leaders in this sector. In addition, you will consider the important role effective leadership plays in developing and maintaining relationships within the community, and across the constellation of disciplines which play a role in emergency and disaster management.

Assessment Tasks

1 Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Assessment One - The impact of contemporary leadership styles on emergency and disaster management

Task Description

Assessment one asks you to explore the concept and impact of contemporary leadership styles and approaches in emergency and disaster management. In particular, this assessment task asks you to evaluate and engage with contemporary leadership theories and styles, plus management approaches, and then relate those to an emergency and disaster management event of your choice. You may select any emergency and disaster event, as long as you can analyse the impact of leadership theories and styles, plus management approaches on that event.

Firstly, you will identify and provide an overview of the emergency or disaster event to set the scene. You will then evaluate and discuss the leadership theories and styles you identified within the event (supported by appropriate literature and referenced accordingly). Ensure you distinguish between any leadership styles from management approaches. You will then discuss the role and impact of the identified leadership styles and management approaches on the emergency and disaster event you have chosen and any recommendations you have for enhancing leadership in action. Ensure any recommendations are supported by the relevant application of leadership styles relevant to the emergency and disaster management context.

Presentation Guidelines:

Assessment one is submitted via Moodle. You must respond to each requirement (up to approximately 3000 words in total).

Note: Your response must be supported by appropriate literature and referenced accordingly (please see the marking rubric for further details).

The submitted response must include as a minimum:-

Assessment Criteria:

  • Title page;
  • Introduction of your chosen emergency or disaster management event;
  • Evaluation of leadership styles, including distinguishing between management approaches within the event;
  • The impact of the identified leadership styles and management approaches on the emergency and disaster event;
  • Recommendation(s) /enhancement(s);
  • How your recommendation(s) / enhancement(s) are envisaged to improve leadership practice/ an aspect of emergency and disaster management.

Presentation requirements:

Note: Please see Assessment One rubric located in the Assessment Tile in Moodle.

  • Sections: Your report should contain at a minimum the following sections: Cover Page, Introduction, Report body, Conclusion, and Reference List. (You may add subsections to the body if you wish.)
  • Topic: Your assessment should focus on your choice of a emergency or disaster management event. This should not be a shallow summary of this event but a deeper synthesis and analysis of contemporary leadership within your chosen event.
  • Style: This task requires writing at a professional standard, with information presented in a clear & logical sequence, and written in academic style with correct grammar, syntax, and spelling.
  • Research: You must demonstrate critical appraisal by presenting recent literature and synthesising your findings into a coherent assessment.
  • Citations & references: All statements must be correctly cited and referenced in APA 7th Edition style, using reference sources appropriate to the task level.

Document formatting:

  • Cover page: State the title of your paper, your name and student number, your course of study, this unit code and title, and the word count excluding title page, in-text citations, reference list and any appendices. Start these 1/3 down from the top, and make them horizontally centred.
  • Page numbers: Top right in the header, starting from the cover page.
  • Alignment: Left margin alignment throughout; do NOT use justified margins.
  • Body indentation: The first line of each paragraph of the report body is indented 3-5 characters.
  • Font: Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12. Either is fine, but use just one font for the entire document.
  • Spacing: Double spacing throughout the entire document; no extra returns after each paragraph or reference (this is why we have the indentations, headings, and hanging indents).
  • Headings: Section headings are centred and bolded in title case; use APA style headings for any subheadings.
  • Content: All required subsections are present and completed as directed.
  • Referencing: All sources must be cited and referenced appropriately throughout this task in correct APA 7th Edition style; ensure that you use the CQU Library guide for APA style.
  • Word count: 3000 words +/-10%, excluding the cover page, in-text citations, the reference list and appendices. Calculate your word count minus exclusions prior to submission and include this on the cover page.
  • File format: Submit your document in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).
  • Grading rubric: Please refer to the Moodle site for additional task information such as assignment marking rubric.
  • Turnitin: All submissions are subject to Turnitin scans, and all Turnitin reports are scrutinised. All instances of plagiarism are reported to the Academic Misconduct Board for review.

Late submissions: Late submissions will be accepted, but penalties will accrue at 5% for every part or full calendar day past the due date.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
