General Information

Overview

This capstone unit will consolidate relevant knowledge and values acquired throughout the midwifery course thereby facilitating your transition to practicing as a midwife. You will evaluate the breadth and types of maternity services available and explore the role of the midwife in supporting a woman’s informed choice. You will also learn the importance of continual professional development, for your own professional development and for the care you will provide to women and their families. This unit is to be undertaken in conjunction with Midwifery Practice 4.

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). The aspect of this unit which needs improvement is the spacing between assignments for the last term coursework. We had 3 of the biggest assignments all due within a week of each other. This was a particularly stressful time whilst trying to wrap up the course.

Recommendation

Reconfigure assessment due dates for greater spread across the term.

Aim:

The aim of this assessment is to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate an applied knowledge of Australian midwifery services, your role and responsibilities as a registered midwife and health professional within these services, how you will support birthing women and continue your professional development.

Instructions

You are required to participate in an online group discussion via the Moodle subject discussion forum, which will be directed by the Unit Coordinator. The group discussion will take place on 3 (three) set weeks over the term and is based on topics in your study guide. Marks will be awarded as per the marking rubric. Give your professional opinion and write a discussion, using professional and academic dialogue that is supported by evidence. Each online submission is due by the Friday of that week at 18:00 pm AEST.

The Online Discussion will occur on weeks: 3, 5 and 7.

Week 3 Topic: Midwifery is a “Primary Health” strategy – what do you understand this statement to mean, and how does the philosophy of midwifery fit into this strategy? Consider midwifery practice and primary healthcare services. Discuss what role midwives could play in providing primary health to support women, infants, and communities?

Week 5 Topic: The underlying framework that elevates midwifery to a profession is regulation, education and association. Discuss how these three elements of a profession are evident in Australian midwifery and why is it important for midwifery to be a profession?

Week 7 Topic: Under legislation, midwives are required to undertake 20 hours of Continuing Practice Development (CPD) annually. CPD requirements for midwives include newly graduated midwives even if they are not yet employed. Many new graduate midwives may not commence employment for up to 12-18 months post-graduation but will need to maintain CDP to keep their registration. Identify and Discuss three or more CPD options, (outside of employer provider training) what they entail and the costs (think outside the box). Include in your discussion what further training you would like to undertake to advance your career.

Contribution to the online group discussion means to add to the topics in the weekly study guide and to expand upon the discussion generated by your colleagues with reference to the literature. Simply stating 'yes I agree with previous statements' will not be considered as contributing to the discussion. If you are citing from other’s work in your post, you will be required to reference this using APA 7th edition style.

Assessment Due Date: Each post will be due on the Friday of that week by 1800 hrs AEST and final submission is due Week 8 on Friday the 6th of May 2022 by 18:00 PM AEST.

The Unit co-ordinator will collate your responses and complete the final submission.

Literature and references

In this assessment you may use contemporary references (<5 years) to support your discussion. You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian College of Midwives.

Requirements

Use a conventional and legible size 12 font, such as Times New Roman or Arial.

You may write in the first-person perspective.

Use formal academic language.

Use the seventh edition American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style. The CQUniversity Academic Learning Centre has an online APA Referencing Style Guide.

The word count is considered from the first word of the post to the last word of the post. The word count excludes the reference list but includes in-text references and direct quotations.

Aim

By undertaking this annotated bibliography students will have the opportunity to build their knowledge on identified topics that relate to written assessment 3, thus building one assignment from the other.

Annotated Bibliography: An annotated bibliography is a brief synopsis of a journal article on a given topic. In essence, it is a list of references with a structured format, and succinct description, and critique of the reference. The annotated bibliography entry commences with the basic bibliographical information, which is alphabetically presented in the standard referencing style, APA 7th. This is then followed by a brief annotation adhering to a format that follows key elements. The annotation comprises a summary and critique of the source material. Resources on annotated bibliography, key elements for inclusion and an exemplar will be provided on the Moodle unit site for further guidance.

Instructions

You are required to prepare an annotated bibliography of four (4) journal articles, that is one (1) article related to the following topics:

1) Maternity Models of Care

2) Career sustainability for Midwives

3) Interprofessional collaboration for midwives

4) Midwives and informed consent.

Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

1) Read the resources provided on the Moodle unit regarding how to write an annotated bibliography.

2) Review the exemplar provided.

3) Review the APA 7th referencing guide provided.

4) Search the CQU library databases for the journal articles you require. You will need one (1) article per topic listed above.

5) Read, comprehend and analyse each journal article to discern the key elements for the annotation. As you read through make notes on the various points and elements you must write within the annotation for each article.

6) Review your notes and compose these into succinct, meaningful sentences that address the key elements.

7) Construct each annotation out of these notes and refined sentences. Write the 400-word annotation to convey the summarization and critique in a professional and academic way.

8) Review your writing: proofread and correct any spelling, grammatical, referencing, or formatting errors.

9) Submit to Studiosity for a final check and make edits as advised.

10) Submit a draft before the due date to review your Turnitin Similarity Score before making a final submission. Instructions are available here.

11) Submit completed assessment task by the due date.

Format for each annotation:

The references and their annotations should be presented in alphabetical order of the first author’s last name. The annotations should be written in academic style (paragraph structure). Avoid using dot points. Each annotation should include:

A summary of the content of the reference.

A description of the author(s) that evaluates the author’s credentials (e.g. are they an expert on the subject matter).

Provide the context for the journal article for example: if it discussed a research study, the research setting and country where the research was conducted.

A summary of the key themes or arguments presented in the reference.

An explanation of how the research was conducted and an evaluation of the validity of the research methods.

Your evaluation (critical analysis) of the reference. The annotation needs to demonstrate your analytical/critical thinking ability, which might include comments about aspects such as: how reliable you think the information is, whether there are any flaws in the findings/discussion/research or the conclusions, how you think it contributes to the knowledge of the topic, who the reference has been written for (its audience), or how the reference may be useful for the midwifery profession.

These points should be combined into the one paragraph, for example, the summary of the content could also include the context of the discussion/research and/or the credentials of the author.

In this assessment use at least four (4) contemporary references (<7 years) to support your discussion. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage.

Aim:

The aim of this assessment is to gain an insight and understanding of the challenges, issues, and facilitators that a graduate midwife may encounter, experience, and overcome, which shaped their personal and professional development for career sustainability and evolving clinical confidence in midwifery practice. Students will develop an awareness of the key values associated with a commitment to ongoing midwifery development from both a personal and professional perspective.

Instructions

This assessment requires you to interview a graduate or early career midwife who commenced clinical practice in the last 7 years. You are to explore with them both positive and negative transition experiences and what personal and professional skills, attributes, continuing professional development, and key qualities they implemented or developed in relation to their professional development and career sustainability. Some key elements of registered midwifery practice that may be included in the interview are advocacy, informed consent, interprofessional collaboration and communication, working in various models of care and managing work-life balance.

Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

1. Obtain the midwife’s consent in writing, see attached document. They will choose a pseudonym to protect their privacy.

2. Conduct an interview which should be no longer than 20 minutes.

3. Record the interview and then transcribe it.

4. Listen to the interview and identify the main themes that arise in the interview in relation to the midwife’s experience of career transition experiences, the personal and professional mitigation strategies they implemented, and the key values associated with a commitment to ongoing professional midwifery development.

5. From the identified themes you will write a 2500 essay that explores the challenges, barriers and facilitators experienced by graduates and early career midwives for the ongoing development of professional clinical confidence and personal sustainability. Provide in your discussion, the key values associated with a commitment to ongoing professional midwifery development.

6. Your submission includes the consent form, interview transcript and recording and your accompanying essay.

Interview Instructions:

Please instruct your participant to choose a pseudonym that they will be called by, and advise them not to mention their HHS name during the interview or the town they reside in.

You can record your interview using a smart phone, tablet or mobile device. Literature and references

In this assessment use at least 7 contemporary references (<7 years) to support your discussion. You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. Use a conventional and legible size 12 font, such as Times New Roman or Arial with 2.0 line spacing and 2.54cm page margins (standard pre-set margin in Microsoft Word).
