General Information

Overview

In this capstone unit, you will consolidate knowledge, skills, and values acquired throughout your course to facilitate your transition to registered midwifery practice. Midwives face challenges in their everyday practice, and this unit will equip you with graduate capabilities, resilience skills and strategies to mitigate personal risk and encourage peer support to effectively deal with these challenges encountered throughout your career. You will also learn the importance of continual professional development, for your own career progression, and for the care you will provide to women and their families.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Co-requisites: MDWF14002 Pharmacology for Midwifery Practice.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Feedback

The majority of feedback provided centred on the group presentation assessment. They felt this approach led to unequal contributions by students and resulted in grades that did not accurately reflect individual effort. One student's feedback was: the unit overall was fantastic but the group work within this unit left me very frustrated. I am unsure of how to resolve this. I was ignored by group members and had multiple meetings cancelled which left me with a very disappointed end product (assessment). I do appreciate the support I received when I expressed my frustration to a staff member.

Recommendation

The group presentation assessment will be revisited by the midwifery team and developed into an individual presentation for future offerings. Efforts will be made to align the assessment with the learning outcomes of the unit whilst addressing the student feedback raised.

Another comment on the group presentation was that combining a short individual written component with the presentation was time-consuming.

Recommendation

Although the assessment carries a 50% weighting, revisions will focus on streamlining the process and addressing the time burden on students.
