Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Marker feedback
Marking guide for assessment 3 was changed in Term 1, 2020 to incorporate referencing in each item rather than at the end of the marking criteria. However markers founded it difficult to clearly allocate marks for referencing so the marking guide has been revised for Term 2, 2020.
Marking guide has been revised for Term 2, 2020 to make the allocation of marks for referencing clearer for both students and markers
Feedback from Student feedback
Student feedback was that NURS11158 was well structured. Students found the assessments requirement clear. Feedback indicated the resources provided to students assist students to meet both personal learning goals and the unit learning outcomes.
Continue providing support and resources to meet student learning needs.
- Discuss the concepts that underpin evidence based nursing practice for person centred nursing care
- Utilise evidence based frameworks to locate resources that support person safety and quality

1 Written Assessment
Perla Daniel is 78 years old and has recently moved into a low care residential facility. Perla suffers from chronic low back pain. She tells you that since she is sitting around more in her little unit, her pain has become worse. Perla states that she has previously used to take NSAIDS (Ibuprofen) and a hot pack for the pain. However, recently the anti-inflammatories have been giving her heartburn and making her feel sick. Her GP is on leave and the locum has ordered “Panadeine” and bed rest for the pain. Perla says a friend of hers started Yoga and she says it has helped her low back pain tremendously. Perla asks you whether exercise like Yoga or Tai Chi could be better for her low back pain than the “Panadeine”.
Word count – 1000 words (+/-10%)
Instructions
You are to search the library databases to find evidence that will assist Perla to make an informed decision.
The learning for this assignment will take place in Weeks 1 to 5. During this time, you will learn about the PICO framework, why we use it, and how it helps to find credible research relevant to the clinical world and how to complete it. In this assessment, you will provide evidence of your learning by using the PICO template to build a systematic literature search. To assist you in this task a blank PICO template is provided on the Unit Moodle site along with an example of a completed PICO template.
IMPORTANT – You are required to use the PICO template available on the NURS11158 Moodle site under the assessment tab when completing the tasks for this assessment. Please note: Evidence sources should be no older than 5 years.
Task 1: Development of PICO (not included in word count)
Firstly, complete the PICO (population/patient, intervention/issue, control/comparison, and outcomes) framework, in response to Perla’s situation.
Secondly, develop a research question to help search the situation.
Thirdly, document the databases accessed and identify the search terms used. Databases for finding academic resources include MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane, JBI, etc. You are to search at least four databases and find the ‘best’ five academic resources including journal articles, systematic reviews, and evidence summaries.
Task 2: Five justifications paragraphs, each “justifying” why the resources you have selected are credible to answer the clinical question – Total word count: 1000 words (approximately 200 words for each justification. The word count includes, type of study, ethical approval and justification. The APA references are not included in the word count). Please ensure your assignment is double spaced and you use 12-point Times New Roman font.
Select five of the ‘best’ academic resources from your research. Use the headings:
(i) Reference (APA). Provide an APA reference for each academic resource. APA references use a hanging indentation, and the first line of the justification paragraph should be indented; see the example PICO and the 7th edition of the APA referencing guide.
(ii) Type of Study. Indicate the type of study for each article/resource e.g. Systematic Review.
(iii) Ethical Approval. State whether the article/resource required ethical approval? Yes/No - if yes, was it clearly stated in the article/resources? If no, why not?
(iv) Write five justification paragraphs. Each paragraph must evaluate the five components of academic credibility (ARCOC - Authority, Relevance, Coverage, Objectivity, and Currency). Write a justification for EACH of the academic resources you have selected to answer your clinical question. Be sure to state why the selected resource is academically credible. The justification paragraph MUST include the five components of academic credibility (Authority, Relevance, Coverage, Objectivity, and Currency). These exact words MUST be included in the justification. Slight variations of the root word are acceptable e.g. Authority, authoritative.
Note. You are simply evaluating the credibility of the resource. You are NOT summarising the study/ article.
Week 5 Friday (14 Aug 2020) 4:00 pm AEST
Students are to submit on the template supplied in word format only.

3 Written Assessment
This assignment focuses on evaluating and referencing clinical practice guidelines, evaluating and referencing reputable websites, and analysing bio-ethical considerations in evidence-based nursing practice. You will also need to access the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.
Setting the Scene for your assignment: You are a nursing student on clinical placement in the care facility where Perla lives. Your RN buddy is impressed with the research you did to help Perla decide on the best pain relief for her sore back. The RN shares with you their observations that they have many residents wishing to use non-invasive alternative and complementary pain relief therapies rather than take medications. Unfortunately, it appears not all staff support patients contributing to decisions about their own health care. Some staff view patients as being difficult, if they request alternatives to their prescribed medical plan of care. The RN adds that the facility does not have any current guidelines, based on the best available evidence, regarding the management of people wishing to use alternative or complementary pain relief therapies. This result in inconsistent information being provided to the facility residents. The RN asks you to help them search and review the current evidence to assist the facility to develop up-to-date policies and procedures regarding the safe use of alternative and complementary pain relief.
Instructions
Following on from your searches in Assessment 1, you are to write recommendations for the facility to assist them in ensuring their practice aligns with the best available evidence. You also need to explore the ethical considerations of this scenario.
What sources of evidence you must use: You MUST use relevant clinical practice guidelines, reputable websites, credible journal articles, the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. You may also use relevant articles from your first assessment.
What do you need to do next: First, appraise the evidence presented in clinical practice guidelines, websites and academic materials including journal articles. Secondly, explore the ethical considerations, and finally, provide evidence-based recommendations that can be incorporated into the facility’s policies and into clinical nursing practice.
To summarise how to set out your assessment:
Task 1. Summary of evidence and recommendations. Locate at least one relevant clinical practice guideline, reputable websites and a selection of credible journal articles. Summarise the current evidence and recommendations for this situation. Relate these findings to the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.
Task 2. Ethical considerations. Describe the ethical considerations in relation to the scenario above. Limit your discussion points to the four ethical principles (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice). These exact words MUST be included in the discussion.
Task 3. Provide evidence-based recommendations for the facility. Provide 2-4 clear evidence-based recommendations able to be incorporated into policies and procedures and into clinical nursing practice. Justify your recommendations. Be sure to include in-text citations for your recommendations.
Please note: Evidence sources should be no older than 5 years.
The format of your assignment should be as follow:
- A title page. Please see Assessment 3 exemplar for title page requirements.
- Body (consisting of 3 sections with headings as per the tasks).
- References in the 7th edition of the APA style. This is available via a link on the NURS11158 Moodle site.
Formatting: i) APA reference list items use a hanging indentation; and ii) the first line of each paragraph should be indented; see the exemplar and the 7th edition of the Abridged APA Referencing Guide on the Moodle site for guidance. Please ensure your assignment is double spaced and you use 12-point Times New Roman font.

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
