General Information

Overview

Throughout this unit, you will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills to provide basic nursing care at at beginning level. In particular, you will be able to conduct a holistic assessment and assist a person with their activities of daily living in the simulated environment. You will be introduced to the significance of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) and other policies, codes, and guidelines relevant to professional nursing practice. You will explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and commence using the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will become familiar with scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in compulsory on-campus workshops or a residential school for this unit.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

I just want to say I have loved this subject the most out of all 4 for this term. I really enjoyed myself at residential school in Brisbane with Tracey. She was so knowledgeable and professional yet still easy to approach when needing help and gave appropriate knowledge for our level.

Recommendation

We will continue to offer relevant information at residential schools

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

I really enjoyed this subject and the real world approach of all the lecturers both in week to week classes and at residential school. Big thanks to Sandy, Lucinda, Tracey Bell, Tracey Sims and Nakia for being so sharing of your knowledge and time. If

Recommendation

The teaching team will continue to be approachable and available for students

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

If possible, please include the information that how to complete the checks for placement in the practical unit for the entire class. As some of the documents are difficult to complete and need help. If the tutor will provide the information in the class, then it would really be helpful, especially for the international students, who struggle a lot till the deadline of the checks to complete it. One more request, please request the student help desk at the university they should guide and inform the students if they require the WIL team's help rather than saying that students can only contact the WIL team through email or call, which sometimes takes more time. Even though the WIL team is available in building 5.

Recommendation

Information about clinical placement requirements was discussed with students during the weekly chat sessions. Some students did comment that this information was not relevant to the content of the Unit

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

This has been by far the most well organised and implemented subject I have ever done. The academics have made all expectations very clear, I have enjoyed the layout of the weekly content and the extra readings. The residential school was extremely useful and the feedback was exceptional. I highly rate this subject and the teaching team. The weekly chats were also a wonderful alternative to tutorials and I would recommend this for other subjects to take on board.

Recommendation

The weekly sessions will continue to be available for students and recorded for those who cannot attend in person

Assessment Tasks

1 In-class Test(s)

Assessment Title
In Class Maths Quiz

Task Description

You will complete a maths quiz on day 1 of residential school or during the last session of internal classes. This invigilated quiz will be completed during your planned on-campus classes and will assess your knowledge and understanding of mathematics. You will be given a second and third attempt whilst attending on-campus classes.

You must complete the quiz in one sitting, under the direct supervision of a lecturer. Once you have started the quiz, you cannot log out. Please do not refresh or reload your screen; this may close the quiz and record your result.

The quiz will automatically close at the end of one hour and will submit your result.

You have a maximum of three attempts to complete the quiz. Each attempt will be held on a different day whilst on-campus.

If you require an additional attempt, you must undertake remediation by completing a learning package and practice quiz prior to subsequent attempts. These learning packages are available on the Maths Central platform on Nursing Central. It is your responsibility to complete this between each attempt.

You will demonstrate safe practice through assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.

You will be given three attempts to pass this assessment and must engage in feedback and reflection before attempts 2 and 3. All attempts are conducted face-to-face.

If you are not successful on the 3rd attempt, you may receive a Fail grade.

All assessments in this unit align with the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework).

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.

What can you do to act with integrity?
