General Information

Overview

Working within the nursing laboratory and a variety of health care settings, you will develop knowledge and abilities in biopsychosocial assessment, planning, delivery and the evaluation of nursing care in meeting the needs of individuals and families adapting to acute alterations in health at all stages of the lifespan. You will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice during the compulsory three (3) day residential school or timetabled internal nursing laboratories as well as 120 hour clinical placement.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Please note that if you are a Recency of Practice student returning to the Bachelor of Nursing after a break of more than 23 consecutive months you may be required to attend further clinical learning sessions prior to commencement of NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2.


Attendance at On-Campus Learning Sessions with Injuries and/or Illness 

Due to the nature of the practical skills being undertaken in the Clinical Learning sessions, at times pre-existing injuries or illnesses may pose a problem. Should you have pre-existing or current injuries or be experiencing an illness please email BNursing Head of Course at bnursingHOC@cqu.edu.au to seek clarification as to whether you are able to attend your on-campus learning sessions or require a medical clearance. Please forward a copy of the BNursing Head of Course correspondence to NURS12156@cqu.edu.au prior to your on-campus learning session. Please note – failure to receive clarification, or if required medical clearance, to attend the on-campus learning sessions with pre-existing or current injuries or illness may result in you being turned away from the on-campus learning session.

1 Practical and Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Practical Assessment of Clinical Skills, Progress Notes and Calculation Test

Task Description

You will be required to demonstrate your ability in a number of clinical skills while at the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 on campus learning sessions. The assessments will include: Practical Assessment of Clinical Skills, Written Progress Notes and Online Calculation Test.

Part A - Clinical Skills Assessment and Progress Notes

This assessment will be a simulation assessment activity focusing on your clinical abilities and safe nursing practice. Time allocated to complete this assessment is 20 minutes.The Clinical Skills Assessment will be held during the last week/day of your on-campus clinical learning sessions/residential school. At the completion of your Clinical Skills Assessment you are required to accurately document the outcomes as progress notes using the SOAPIE framework. The progress notes must be comprehensive, legal, and legible. These must be hand written on the form available in the Unit Moodle site and uploaded to the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 Moodle site within 3 days of completing your on-campus Clinical Skills Assessment. A maximum of 3 attempts at achieving this assessment will be permitted. If you are not successful on the 3rd attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will be a Fail for the unit.

Part B - Online Calculation Test

You will be required to achieve 100% in an online calculation test using the Medication Safety Assessment Test - Assessment 7 - http://ilearn.e3.learning.com.au/ - in a computer laboratory on the last week/day of your on-campus learning sessions/residential school. If you score less than 100% in your first attempt, you will be provided with an additional two (2) opportunities to achieve a Pass. The second attempt will be before completing your on-campus learning session/residential school. The third attempt will need to be arranged in consultation with the Unit Coordinator(s). If you are a student requiring a third attempt at the online calculation test, you will need to contact the unit coordinator for guidance. If you are not successful on this third attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will be a Fail for the unit.

Please note – A result of 100% is required to pass. When 100% is achieved in the online calculation test you will receive a certificate of completion that must be uploaded to the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 Moodle site within 3 days of completing your on-campus learning sessions. This certificate must have the date on which you sat the test on-campus.

Please note – The second/third attempt(s) at Assessment 1 will only be available to students who submit their assessment by the due date. Please see the CQUniversity Assessment Policy and Procedures (Higher Education).  


Assessment Due Date

Completed during the on-campus clinical learning sessions. Please note – The progress notes and certificate of completion for the online calculation test must be uploaded to the Unit Moodle site within 3 days of completing your Clinical Skills Assessment.


Return Date to Students

You will be advised immediately following the Clinical Skills Assessment if remediation is required. Feedback on your progress notes will be provided within 10 working days following submission to Moodle. You will be advised on the day if you have been successful in your Clinical Skills Assessment and Online Calculation Test. Please see Assessment Criteria below for further information.

You must pass this assessment to be eligible to complete clinical placement. Only three attempts at completing each component of this assessment are permitted. Resubmission can only occur after receiving initial submission feedback.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment 1 Part A - Clinical Skills Assessment and Progress Notes

Clinical Skills Assessment and Progress Notes consists of two activities, which must be completed in accordance with the criteria for a pass on the marking guide before a pass can be awarded.


Clinical Skills Assessment will be based on skills covered during the on-campus clinical learning sessions. To attain a pass you must achieve all the following components for each skill:

  • Student demonstrates the 5 moments of hand hygiene and infection control principles.

  • Student safely assesses situation and person as per simulation scenario and relevant NURS12156 skill audits.

  • Student demonstrates safe and timely administration of medication adhering to the 5 rights of medication administration, 3 checks and 3 patient identifiers.

  • Student undertakes clinical procedure as per simulation scenario with particularly emphasis on patient safety, critical thinking and team work.

  • Student effectively communicates with patient in a person centered approach.

  • Student demonstrates application of the ISBAR communication technique.

  • Student applies legal principles of professional documentation in bedside chart.

Progress Notes – To achieve a pass the nursing progress notes need to be comprehensive, precede in a logical manner (SOAPIE framework to be used), be clear, accurate, and meet legal requirements for documentation. Please see NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 Moodle site for the detailed marking guide that will be used to evaluate your progress notes. Please note - Progress note submission must be accompanied by a Progress note self evaluation checklist/marking guide provided on the Moodle site.


Part B Online Calculation Test

You are required to achieve 100% in the Online Calculation Test in order to demonstrate safe nursing practice. You will have three (3) attempts only at undertaking the Online Calculation Test. If you score less than 100% in your first attempt, you will be provided with an additional two (2) opportunities to achieve a Pass. The second attempt will be before completing your on-campus learning session/residential school. The third attempt will need to be arranged in consultation with the Unit Coordinator(s). If you are a student requiring a third attempt at the online calculation test, you will need to contact the unit coordinator for guidance. If you are not successful on this third attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will be a Fail for the unit.

Important: A maximum of three (3) attempts at completing the Practical Assessment of Clinical Skills, Progress Notes and Online Calculation Test will be permitted. Should you not achieve the required standard by the third attempt you will not be eligible to complete the clinical placement component of NURS12156 and the CQUniversity Work-Integrated Learning/Student Placements policy and procedures will be enacted.

Task Description

The Clinical Portfolio consists of six (6) online activities, all of which must be completed to a pass level. These activities are:

  • Activity 1 - Cultural Safety – Cultural Awareness Passport
  • Activity 2 - Principles of Infection Prevention and Control
  • Activity 3 - Medication Safety 2019 – 7 certificates and 2 case studies
  • Activity 4 - Blood Safe - Clinical Transfusion Practice
  • Activity 5 - Inpatient Medication Charts – Adult.

3 Professional Practice Placement

Assessment Title
Clinical Learning Goals, Reflection on Clinical Learning Goals, and 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT

Task Description

Assessment 3 consists of three parts.

Part A – Setting Clinical Learning Goals

Establish and record a minimum of three (3) Clinical Learning Goals to be achieved during your clinical placement. One of these goals must relate to how you will build resilience during your clinical placement.

You need to ensure your clinical learning goals are inline with the SMART Goal setting framework. An example is provided on the Unit Moodle site. You need to use the SMART goal framework to develop your clinical learning goals that reflect unit content and are inline with the learning outcomes of NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2. You need to show how you will achieve your clinical learning goals. Your Clinical Learning Goals are to be shared with your off-campus Facilitator/Preceptor on the first day of placement. Maximum 600 words.

Part B – Reflection on Clinical Learning Goals

At the completion of your clinical placement you are required to reflect on how successful your were at achieving your goals.

To achieve this you are required to:

1. Select one of the reflection models available on the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 Moodle site to use as a framework for your reflection.

2. View the three resources on resilience available on the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 Moodle site.

3. Using the information in the resources and the reflection model you are required to reflect on your three learning goals. You need to be sure to discuss the resilience strategies implemented to achieve your goals. Maximum 1000 words


Part C - The 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT

The 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT requires the completion of 120 clinical hours and demonstration of your ability to perform the nursing role within your scope of practice as measured against the NMBA competencies outlined in the 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT. In addition you are required to meet the minimum requirements for NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2. The minimum requirements documents is available on the Unit Moodle site. The required hours of clinical practice must be completed in entirety and a pass grade received in order to be eligible for a pass grade for this Unit. Please see the CQUniversity Clinical Placement Attendance policy for further information.

IMPORTANT

CQU WIL Policy and Procedures states: 4.51 Students who do not formally withdraw or notify their Unit Coordinator and who do not participate in an allocated WIL activity may receive a Fail grade. Part A - Clinical Learning Goals

To achieve a pass for your Clinical Learning Goals you must meet the following criteria:

1. Establishment and recording of a minimum of three (3) SMART Clinical Learning Goals that reflect the Unit content and are inline with the learning outcomes of NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2. One of these learning goals must be on resilience and how you plan to build your resilience during your clinical placement

2. Address potential strategies to achieve your Clinical Learning Goals.

3. Achieve the required word limit (+/-10%) – maximum word count – 600 words.

Part C - 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT

The assessment criteria in the 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT is based on the NMBA competencies and the minimum requirements for clinical placement available on the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 Moodle site. Assessment criteria and performance standards for the 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT includes:

1. Completion of 120 hours of clinical practicum,

2. Complete the self assessment in the 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT at both Formative and Summative stages of the practicum and;

3. Assessment and recording of your performance by the identified Facilitator/Preceptor at both Formative and Summative stages of the practicum. Further information on the assessment criteria is outlined in the '2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT ' available of the Clinical Moodle site.

4. Meeting of minimum requirements for clinical placement for NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2.

Please note: You will receive ongoing feedback during your clinical placement as part of your formative assessment. This is to provide you with an opportunity for further development prior to your summative assessment at the end of your clinical placement. If you are not meeting satisfactory practice standards at any point of the placement, a support plan will be implemented in an effort to assist you to satisfactorily meet requirements. Unsatisfactory behaviours, which jeopardise the safety of yourself, others or people in your care or that do not adhere with the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, Code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics, Professional Boundaries and/or Social Media Policy criteria may result in you being removed from placement. If you do not meet each standard at a pass level you will be a fail for the Unit.

Please note - The check list/marking guide that will be used to assess your Clinical Learning Goals, Reflection on Learning and 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT available on the Unit Moodle site. Using the checklist/marking guide you are required to undertake a self assessment prior to submission of your work. This checklist must be submitted with your assessment 3 documents.

Hard copy: The 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT is to be submitted in hardcopy to the assigned Facilitator or your Preceptor for assessment rating. This document will be returned to you by your assigned Facilitator or Preceptor. Online: At the completion of your clinical placement please fill out the NURS12156 Assignment 3 checklist available on the Unit Moodle site. The completed checklist and an electronic version of your completed Clinical Learning Goals, Reflection on Clinical Learning Goals, and 2019 Clinical Placement ANSAT, including attendance record, are to be uploaded into the NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2 moodle site within 5 days of completing placement.
