Overview
This unit will introduce you to concepts and knowledge required to effectively care for patients experiencing complex alterations in health. You will critically consider the care provided to patients, including strategies to assist individuals and significant others when dealing with health crises. In addition, effective communication and collaboration in a complex situation is paramount. Appropriate provision of care including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of safe nursing care in various complex health care situations will be adopted in this unit. You will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice during the compulsory three (3) day residential school or timetabled internal nursing laboratory sessions and 160 hour clinical placement consisting of 80 hours of complex care and 80 hours of mental health setting.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from End of term unit evaluation report.
Exclusion of the nursing process and ten references from the reflective pieces requirements. 1000 word-count reflection could not contain the assessment item requirements.
- Clear instructions on the use of reflective cycle/model and how to write an academic reflection. Use of academic references would be a maximum of 3 peer-reviewed articles. 1000 word-count succinct reflection. More support will be provided to students before the due dates. - Information about the written assessment item would be placed on the unit Moodle site for more clarity. - More time for students to complete written (reflective piece) assessment item.
Feedback from End of term unit evaluation report
Blackboard Collaborate was not appropriate to deliver online lectures to due to a large number of students. Blackboard Collaborate cannot contain large number of students at the same time.
Echo360 or Zoom should be used to deliver weekly online lectures or other discussions.
Feedback from End of term unit evaluation report
Reports from various clinical facilities (mental health) indicated that undergraduate students should not be posted to mental health facilities due to its high-stake duties/practice. Mental health nursing is not a general nursing skill and second-year students struggled on these placements.
Discussion is in progress among the stakeholders to resolve the issues associated with mental health component and a resolution will be presented before the next offering in Term 2 2017.
Feedback from From clinical placements
The Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) was confusing to the clinical facilitators/nurse educators and students
The ANSAT document would be discussed during the weekly lectures/tutorials before clinical placements embarkment
Feedback from End of term unit evaluation report
Class size should commensurate with the number of the members of the teaching team.

1 Practical and Written Assessment
Assessment 1 has two parts:
Part 1: Before attending your residential school or first clinical learning session, it is highly recommended that you revise and practise previously taught medication calculations undertaken in NURS12156 Clinical Nursing Practice 2. You will be required to achieve 100% in an online medication administration quiz using the Med+Safe software program in a computer laboratory in the first hour of your residential school or clinical learning session. If you score less than 100% in your first attempt, you will be provided with an additional two (2) opportunities to achieve a Pass. The second attempt will be before completing your residential school or your final clinical learning session. The third attempt will be required to be completed by the Thursday before your scheduled clinical placement. If you are one of these students, you will need to contact the unit coordinator for guidance. If you are not successful on this third attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will be a Fail for the unit.
Part 2: Practical Assessment of clinical skills - This assessment will be a simulation assessment activity focusing on your clinical abilities and safe nursing practice. You will be allowed 20 minutes to complete this section of the assessment. You will be required to demonstrate your ability in a number of clinical skills while at the NURS12158 Clinical Nursing Practice 3 on-campus learning sessions. This assessment will take the form of clinical skills assessments within a simulation assessment activity along with a written component about the care you provided. You are required to write and submit a personal debrief using a template provided within three days of completing your on-campus activities.
According to the date of residential school attendance or clinical learning session.
Advice will be given immediately following the completion of the practical assessment item if a support plan is required. The written assessment item result will be determined at the end of the session/s
You will need to achieve 100% in the medication administration assessment.
Practical Assessment of Clinical Skills: Pass/Fail.
You will be formatively assessed on a number of clinical skills and be provided with support and feedback.

2 Written Assessment
This reflection is part of your ongoing clinical learning that extends to include developing skills in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a care plan that promotes confidence in developing the professional standards required of a registered nurse according to the NMBA.
During clinical placement, you will be required to write a reflection for each clinical setting. For example, you can choose from an interesting clinical experience, a clinical case study, a clinical scenario or a difficult clinical situation. The word limit for each clinical setting reflection is 1000 words. There is a leeway of +/-10% allowable for this word limit and includes in-text referencing.
Two reflective pieces will be required: one on the complex care component and one on the mental health component. The reflection should include what happened and any suggestions that may have improved the clinical situation. Did the situation have an impact on you, your patient and/or a staff member? Did the situation affect other family members?
This assessment item should be in MS-Word document format and submitted to the unit Moodle site.
Submit to the unit Moodle site within one week of completing your clinical placement.
Your results will be uploaded on Moodle within 21 working days of submission
The clinical situation is clearly identified.
The reflective piece must apply the principles from the nursing process to deliver evidence-based, person-centred nursing care to in consumers, families, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team experiencing complex alterations in health status.
You are required to choose one of the seven Registered Nurse Standards for Practice as a basis for this clinical experience reflection.
Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and advanced communication skills in collaborating effectively with consumers, families, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
Gibbs reflective cycle was used to reflect on the clinical learning experience and the nursing process approach was used to provide clinical care to the patient.

3 Professional Practice Placement
The Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool requires the completion of two clinical components. One component is complex care requiring 80 hours and a mental health component requiring 80 hours. A total of 160 hours of clinical placement is required for this unit where you will demonstrate your ability to perform the nursing role within your scope of practice as measured against the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice.
You must meet both academic and professional requirements at all times while undertaking nursing studies. If your progress is deemed to be unsatisfactory at any time during this clinical placement unit as per the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework) and Work Integrated Learning Student Placement Policy and Procedure, you will not be eligible for a supplementary assessment and may receive a fail grade for NURS12158 Clinical Nursing Practice 3.
You are required to submit your completed Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool documentation to the unit Moodle site within one week of completing your clinical placement.
Clinical Competency Performance Assessment results will be uploaded on the Moodle site within 21 days of submission of the documentation to the unit Moodle site.
The Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool has been designed to enable you to demonstrate the development of professional attributes required by the registered nurse. The criteria in the Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool are based on the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice. These criteria will be used to evaluate your ability to perform your nursing role within your scope of practice and to determine your ability to meet the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice as per your current year level. For example, as you are a year-2 student it is expected that you will perform within the scope of practice of a year-2 nursing student and demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving and clinical skills applicable to a year-2 nursing student.
Assessment criteria and performance standards for the Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool includes:
- successful completion of the required hours of clinical placement as set out in the unit profile and Bachelor of Nursing Handbook;
- a self-assessment of your own clinical performance against the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice at both formative and summative stages of the clinical placement; and
- assessment and recording of your performance by the identified preceptor/clinical facilitator at both formative and summative stages of the clinical placement.
Further information on the assessment criteria is outlined in the 'Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool' available of the Clinical Moodle site.
If you are identified as not achieving the required standards or competency for your year level you may be required to complete further learning as outlined in an individual support plan. The unit coordinator in consultation with the student and clinical facilitator/preceptor will prepare the individual support plan. If you are still not able to achieve the required standards or competency level with the assistance and direction of the support plan a fail grade will be awarded.
Please see the CQUniversity Suitability for Clinical Placement policy on the Clinical Placement Moodle site for further information.
Students who fail to meet the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool document may be withdrawn from the clinical setting and a fail grade awarded.
IMPORTANT: It is important you refer to the Clinical Competency Performance Assessment Tool prior to and throughout your clinical placement.
