2 Practical and Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Practical and Written Assessment

Task Description

Assessment 2 has two parts:

Part 1: Online medication administration quiz.

Before attending your residential school or first clinical learning session, revise and practice medication calculations using the Med+Safe Learning Program.

You will be required to undertake an online medication administration quiz using the Med+Safe Learning Program software during your residential school or clinical learning session.

For this medication administration quiz, you will be required to achieve 100%. If you achieve less than 100% in your first attempt, you will be provided with two extra opportunities to achieve 100%.

The first opportunity to redo the medication administration quiz will be made available during residential school or during your final clinical learning session.

If you fail to achieve 100% at the second attempt, you will need to organise another time with the Unit Coordinator. This needs to be scheduled prior to your clinical placement. If you are not successful on your third attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will not achieve a Passing grade for the unit.

Part 2: Practical Assessment of clinical skills and written reflection on learning.

This will be a simulation based assessment focusing on your clinical skills and safe nursing practice within the scope of practice of a student undertaking NURS12158. The practical component of this assessment will occur during your residential school or clinical learning session. You will be allowed 20 minutes to complete this section of the assessment. If you are unsuccessful at your first attempt, you will have the ability to resit during the on campus session.  If you are unsuccessful after your second attempt, a third attempt will need to be organised with the Unit Coordinator.  You may have a maximum of three attempts at this assessment.  Please see below for further clarification.

You will be required to submit to the Moodle site a written reflection about the care you provided during this simulation assessment activity, using the STAR-L model.

You will be permitted one opportunity to resubmit your reflection if you receive an unsatisfactory result for the reflection section. Please note – The second attempt at Assessment 2 - Part 2 - written reflection on learning, will only be available to students who submit their assessment by the due date.

Please see the NURS12158 Moodle site for a checklist of the requirements for this assessment.  Complete the student self checklist and upload to the Moodle site with the reflection within 3 working days of completing your on campus assessment.

Important: A maximum of three (3) attempts at completing the Practical Assessment of Clinical Skills and Online Calculation Test will be permitted. Should you not achieve the required standard by the third attempt you will not be eligible to complete the clinical placement component of NURS12158 and the CQUniversity Work-Integrated Learning/Student Placements policy and procedures will be enacted.

3 Professional Practice Placement

Assessment Title
Clinical Placement

Task Description

The NURS12158, 2018 Clinical Competency Performance Assessment requires the completion of two clinical placement components. One placement component is complex care which requires 80 hours.  The other is a mental health placement component which also requires 80 hours. A total of 160 clinical hours are required for this course.  You will demonstrate your ability to perform the nursing role within your NURS12158 scope of practice as measured against the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice outlined in the 2018 Competency Performance Assessment (ANSAT) document.

In addition to your completed ANSAT tool for each clinical area, you are required to present 3 clinical learning goals for each clinical setting (six in total) and write 500 words for each clinical setting on how you worked towards achieving your goals. Goals should be written in the SMART format. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and in a specific Time frame. Goals must be shown to and signed off by your facilitator on your first clinical day. You have the entire 80 hours to complete the goals. Please see the Unit Moodle site for the NURS12158 Clinical Nursing Practice 3 detailed marking guide to be used by your marker. Please complete the student self checklist to document that you have met the criteria before uploading the document. You will be permitted one opportunity to resubmit your goals, if you receive an unsatisfactory result for the goal section. Please note – The second attempt at Assessment 3 -  goals will only be available to students who submit their assessment by the due date.

If you receive an unsatisfactory result in either the Mental Health OR the Complex Care clinical placement you will not be eligible for supplementary assessment and will receive a fail grade for NURS12158 Clinical Nursing Practice 3.

You are required to submit your completed 2018 Clinical Placement Australian Nursing Standards Assessment tool (ANSAT) documentation, record of attendance, your written goals and strategies to achieve them after each clinical placement.  These documents need to be uploaded to the course Moodle site within five working days of completing each clinical placement.

Assessment Due Date

Minimum mark or grade
Students must obtain a Pass in this assessment item to be eligible for an overall Pass in the Unit.

Assessment Criteria

The 2018 Australian Nursing Standards Assessment tool (ANSAT) has been designed to enable you to demonstrate the development of professional attributes required by the registered nurse. The criteria in the ANSAT is based on the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice. These criteria will be used to evaluate your ability to perform your nursing role within your scope of practice and to determine your ability to meet the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice as per your NURS12158 level. For example, as you are a NURS12158 student it is expected that you will perform within the scope of practice of a NURS12158 nursing student and demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving and clinical skills applicable for a NURS12158 nursing student.

Assessment criteria and performance standards for the 2018 Australian Nursing Standards Assessment tool includes:

· completion of the required hours of clinical placement as stipulated by the relevant unit coordinator;

· a self-assessment of your own clinical performance against the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice at both formative and summative stages of the clinical placement; and

· assessment and recording of your performance by the identified preceptor/clinical facilitator at both formative and summative stages of the clinical placement.

Further information on the assessment criteria is outlined in the '2018 Clinical Placement ANSAT tool' available of the Clinical Moodle site. The link to this site is found here: https://moodle.cqu.edu.au/course/view.php?id=2600

If you are identified as not achieving the required standards or competency for NURS12158 you may be required to complete further learning as outlined in an individual support plan. The unit coordinator in consultation with the student and clinical facilitator/preceptor will prepare the individual support plan. If you are still not able to achieve the required standards or competency level with the assistance and direction of the support plan a fail grade will be awarded.

Please see the CQUniversity Suitability for Clinical Placement policy on the Clinical Placement Moodle site for further information.

Students who fail to meet the CQUniversity Student Code of Conduct maybe withdrawn from the clinical setting and a fail grade awarded.

IMPORTANT: It is vital you refer to the semester 2, 2018 Australian Nursing Standards Assessment tool (ANSAT) available on the clinical placement Moodle site prior to and throughout your clinical placement.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?
