General Information

Overview

Australians are living longer. Traditionally health care has been focused on acute illness. The number of people living with chronic disease is growing. This is an important intersection as many chronic illnesses begin as an acute alteration or can cause an acute alteration in health. Australia's National Health Priority Areas (NHPAs) are diseases and conditions given focused attention by government because they significantly contribute to the burden of illness and injury in the Australian community. In this unit, you will identify the NHPAs and explore their link to lifestyle factors such as obesity, insufficient physical activity, tobacco smoking, and alcohol use and their impact on acute health conditions. You will consider the nursing process required to support people with acute conditions or deterioration of people. You will examine factors to assist you in the early recognition of sepsis and determine the nursing role in each phase of the perioperative period. This unit provides the theoretical underpinning for NURS12161 Professional Experience Practice 2 and should be completed with or before NURS12161.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Student experience data

Feedback

The teaching style offered combined with the structure of the unit did not work well me.

Recommendation

This unit uses the flipped classroom approach. This will remain however content specific material will be delivered, in small lessons, with guided and self-directed learning material, to prepare students for online learning sessions. Prerecorded power point presentations are a new addition. The Moodle layout and presentation of learning materials is simplified using more headings to categorise learning material. The e-reading list has been reduced. A one-page quick look guide summarises the weekly learning content to meet the learning objectives. Students can use this as a checklist each week to review and revise their learning.

Feedback from Student experience data

Feedback

This unit would benefit from a better layout on Moodle and having recorded lectures - not only online sessions but mini lectures as well.

Recommendation

The Moodle tiles format will remain. The learning content is reorganised into lessons and interactive content. Checklists are provided for students to mark off learning content when completed. Prerecorded presentations have been included.

Feedback from Student experience data

Feedback

I gained a lot from the assessment focus zooms where we set out small achievable goals

Recommendation

The drop in sessions for the written assessment will remain however more of them will be offered each week.

Assessment Tasks

1 Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Assessment 1 Written assessment

Task Description

NURS12160 - Acute Alterations in Health

Assessment 1 – Written piece

Due date: Thursday March 31st 2022, 2300 Hours (AEST), (Week 4)
Weighting: 40%
Words count: 800 words (+/- 10%)
Unit Coordinators: Colleen Ryan, Ade Adeleye, Rachel Euler
Learning Outcomes Assessed
1. Identify the National Health Priority Areas and discuss their impact on a person’s acute health status
2. Determine the nursing role of each phase of the perioperative period
Aim
In this written piece you will demonstrate your understanding of the NHPA and how they impact acute alterations in a person’s health status. You will also apply your understanding of the nursing perioperative roles to care of a patient experiencing acute alteration in health requiring surgery. Completing this assessment will allow you to deepen your understanding of these concepts to prepare you to provide safe and effective care to patients.
Scenario:
You are a second-year nursing student working in an emergency department of a regional hospital. It is 0700 and you are allocated to work with an RN who is caring for Jack Thomson, a 12-year-old boy brought in by ambulance after rolling his quad bike on the family farm early this morning. Jack’s Xray shows a crush fracture to his lower leg for which he will need open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery. You are asked to prepare Jack for theatre and then accompany Jack to the theatre to observe the ORIF surgery. On completion of the surgery, you will care for Jack in the post-operative anaesthetic unit (PACU) with an RN preceptor. You will discharge Jack from the PACU and perform a handover, under direct supervision of your RN preceptor, to the nurses on the ward, who will be responsible for Jack’s post operative recovery until he is discharged home.
Instructions
If you have not already done so, you must complete Module 1 in NURS12160 that includes Topic 1 – Introduction to National Health Priority Areas and Topic 2: Introduction to perioperative nursing roles and the care of the patient undergoing surgery.
Apply what you have learnt from Module 1 content and the learning activities, and your own research to answer the following questions.
1.Identify the National Health Priority Area(s) that best applies to Jack’s cause of acute alteration in health and explain why this condition is a National Health Priority Area (approximately 200 words).
2.Describe two perioperative nursing roles, introduced in Module 1, and how these relate to preparing, caring, or recovering Jack before, during or following surgery. You may choose any two roles that can be applied to any aspect of Jack’s perioperative care (approximately 200 words).
3.Using one of your chosen perioperative nursing roles, outline and justify the actions the perioperative nurse will undertake when caring for Jack (approximately 400 words).
You are to support your responses with credible citations throughout.

Learning Outcomes Assessed
· Identify the National Health Priority Areas (NHPA) and discuss their impact on a person’s health status
· Discuss socio-cultural and lifestyle issues that may predispose a person to an alteration in health
· Identify factors associated with the early recognition of deteriorating patients
· Identify factors associated with the early recognition of sepsis in the acute care environment
Aim
This case study assessment will assist you in application to practice of the concepts you have learnt in NURS12160.
Instructions
You must watch the video of an interview with Justin in NURS12160 Module 8 learning activity 8.2.1 to understand Justin’s conditions, acute deterioration and lifestyle factors.
In this assessment task you will prepare a case study examining Justin Davies’ recent acute alterations in health and the impact of Justin’s lifestyle habits on the acute alteration. You will also create identify how Justin will deteriorate if he is unable to manage his current lifestyle habits including relating any potential deterioration to a risk of sepsis for Justin. Case studies are regularly used in nursing education to educate staff (professional development) and for introducing policy, procedures and sharing evaluative data. Case studies can be written word documents, as in this case, or PowerPoint presentations. Preparing an engaging, interesting and educational patient case study requires some thoughtful planning and therefore is a useful skill for you to learn.
Step 1: Introduction (guide 150 words)
Introduce the presenting case. Begin with the patient’s (Justin’s) details, name, gender, age, and presenting health condition as well as the acute alteration(s) in health impacting the patient (Justin’s) health condition.
Name the NHPA Justin’s acute alteration falls under.
Introduce the importance of preventing further deterioration in Justin’s condition.
Step 2: Body (guide 500 words)
Provide evidence showing how the NHPA related to Justin’s condition (s) impacts a person’s health status in Australia.
Describe the signs and symptoms you might expect to see in a deteriorating patient presenting with Justin’s condition (s).
Describe and explain how any of the lifestyle factors of alcohol, tobacco, insufficient exercise or obesity are impacting Justin’s acute alterations in health.
Discuss how Justin might continue to deteriorate if he is not able to manage or overcome the lifestyle factors impacting his acute alterations in health.
Identify signs and symptoms of sepsis that may relate to Justin’s condition (s) if he continues to deteriorate further.
Step 6: Conclusion (guide 100 words)
Provide a paragraph concluding your case study and conveying the most important points of the case study to the reader. Think about what you want the reader to take away with them from this case study.
Step 7: References (no more than 15 and no less than 6)
Requirements for literature, referencing and formatting
Resources
· You can use unit provided materials to reference your case study.
· You may also draw on assessments previously submitted however do not self-plagiarise as this will be considered academic misconduct that may attract penalties.

This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
