Practical Clinical Skills Assessment
The
Practical Clinical Skills Assessment assesses your nursing practice against the
Registered nurse standards for practice. To undertake this assessment, you will
participate in a simulation-based activity, where you will demonstrate safe
practice through assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient
care. You will be given two attempts to pass this assessment and must engage in
coaching before attempt 2.

assessment criteria. Please note that areas that are in bold are considered
critical safety elements and must be demonstrated.
Overview
In this unit, you will have the opportunity to practice nursing care in the medical-surgical environment. You will apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice (2016). You will continue to explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and use the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will be expected to identify risk and recognise and respond appropriately to the deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment. You will work within your scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in a compulsory three (3) day residential school prior to attending professional experience placement for this unit. This unit includes a 120 hour block professional experience placement in a medical-surgical environment. You must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Professional experience placements may be limited in your community and you may be placed in other locations. Please be prepared financially and personally to cover the costs to relocate for placements. Due to the limited availability of placements, some block placements have start and/or end dates that fall outside standard term dates.

Attendance Requirements

Feedback from SUTE student comments
Overall PEP2 was satisfactory however there are changes that need to be made especially within medication calculations quizzes. We do not round to nearest thousandths in nursing so why should this be asked in a medication calculations quiz. From listening to other students there have been numerous difficulties in regards to the quiz and therefore I believe this does need to be looked at more closely and scrutinized before opening to students to make questions more relatable to nursing.
Medication calculation quizzes will be revised.

The residential school is currently 3 days and very content heavy, there is discussion of moving to a four day residential school.

This invigilated quiz will be completed during your residential school. The quiz will assess your knowledge and understanding of mathematics and medication calculations.
The quiz consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. You have a maximum of one hour to complete the quiz. You must complete the quiz in one sitting, under the direct supervision of a lecturer. Once you have started the quiz, you cannot log out. Please do not refresh or reload your screen; this may close the quiz and record your result. The quiz will automatically close at the end of one hour and will submit your result.
You have a maximum of three attempts to complete the quiz. Each attempt will be held on a different day of residential school. If you require an additional attempt, you must undertake remediation by completing a learning package and practice quiz prior to subsequent attempts. These learning packages are available on the Maths Central platform on Nursing Central. It is your responsibility to complete this between each attempt.

The Practical Clinical Skills Assessment evaluates your nursing practice against the Registered nurse standards for practice. To undertake this assessment, you will participate in a simulation-based assessment, where you will demonstrate safe practice through assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. You will be given three attempts to pass this assessment and must engage in feedback and reflection before attempts 2 and 3.
Assessment Criteria
This Practical Clinical Skills Assessment will be based on skills and theory you have covered during your unit. To attain a pass, you must satisfactorily complete all areas of the clinical skills assessment tool, found on the NURS12161 Moodle site.
Results returned
Results are discussed immediately after the practical assessment.
You will undertake your first attempt of this assessment on day three of residential school.

Aim:
Your Professional Experience Placement (PEP) is assessed within the Australian Nurse Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT). The aim of the ANSAT is to provide a tool for you and your assessor to record, reflect on and discuss your clinical learning against the Registered nurse standards for practice.
Instructions
1. Prior to your PEP: Locate the Facilitator/preceptor notification form on SONIA.
2. Day 1:
Complete the Facilitator/preceptor notification form and submit on SONIA.
3. Maintain an accurate Record of Attendance timesheet with each shift co-signed by an RN, preceptor or clinical facilitator.
4. Complete a formative ANSAT. This requires you to undertake the following steps:
a. Complete the Student formative self-assessment form found in SONIA and submit this to your assessor when nearing the mid-way point of your placement.
b. Engage in discussion with your assessor after they have completed their feedback in the Formative Assessment in SONIA
c. The Unit coordinator will review your ANSAT assessment, add comments and sign it. If you have score below 3, a learning support plan may be implemented which will provide you with clear performance expectations and goals to work towards.
d. Review the Unit Coordinator’s comments and complete the Student declaration and signature section at the end of your formative ANSAT. You will receive an email notification when this is available. (Completing these steps will trigger the release of the summative ANSAT.)
5. Summative Assessment:
a. Complete your Student summative self-assessment in SONIA and submit this to your assessor when you are nearing the completion of your placement.
b. Your assessor will then complete your Summative Assessment in SONIA discuss your assessment and feedback with you.
c. You will be notified by email to complete the Student declaration and signature section on your summative ANSAT
d. A score of 3 or higher for each ANSAT criterion on the summative ANSAT assessment is required to pass the summative assessment. If you do not meet each ANSAT criteria at a 3 or above on your Summative assessment, you may receive a fail grade for the Unit.
e. The Unit Coordinator will review your summative assessment, check the hours recorded on your Record of Attendance, and assign a grade.
6. If you have used an online timesheet in SONIA, please print this when you have completed your placement. Your finalised Record of Attendance must be uploaded into SONIA within 3 days of completing your placement. Your grade cannot be finalised until you have uploaded your Record of Attendance.
Requirements
As a nursing student representing CQUniversity, you are required to comply with CQU student nurse uniform requirements and the CQU student Charter during your professional experience placement.
Please refer to Work-integrated Learning-Student Placement Policy and Procedure that can be found on the WIL (Work Integrated Learning) Moodle site.
You will be assessed against the ANSAT during your professional experience placement.
Your record of attendance must be uploaded to the NURS13142 Moodle site within three (3) days of completion of your placement. Your summative ANSAT and record of attendance will be marked within seven days. Your result will be available to view immediately after marking has been completed.
Students are assessed against the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT). A copy of this is available to you through SONIA.
Any unsatisfactory performance that jeopardises people's safety in your care or that does not adhere to the NMBA Registered nurse standards for practice, Code of professional conduct, Code of ethics, A nurse's guide to professional boundaries, and Social media policy criteria, may result in your placement being cancelled.
