Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from Student Unit and Teaching Evaluation Feedback, Self-Reflection.

Feedback

Time spent sitting or waiting while students were having assessments completed at Residential School.

Recommendation

Plan to arrange to have a teaching staff member available to direct discussion topics or activities during these times. Could be utilised as a time for 'Q & A' for grad positions or placement questions. Also time for group activities on professionalism, NMBA Standards of Practice or other activities.

Feedback from Student Unit and Teaching Evaluation Feedback, Self-Reflection, Staff Feedback.

Feedback

Great dislike for MedSafe IntelliLearn case study medication assessment. Requests for focus on formula and drug calculations, including formulas and calculations pertaining to milligrams in volume and administration rates (ie. mg per ml per hour).

Recommendation

Options within MedSafe IntelliLearn will be reviewed to ascertain if meeting this request is possible within the medication safety training and assessment program that the School utilises.

Feedback from Student Unit and Teaching Evaluation Feedback, Self-Reflection, Staff Feedback.

Feedback

Residential School format of Medication Assessment and Clinical Assessment daily was well received. Students stated it reduced stress and anxiety levels and was more enjoyable.

Recommendation

Residential School format of daily Medication Assessment and Clinical Assessment will remain.

Feedback from Student Unit and Teaching Evaluation Feedback, Self-Reflection, Staff Feedback.

Feedback

Filming and availability of a 'Clinical Assessment Scenario' video was well received. Assisted students and staff to be aware of what and how the clinical assessment was run. Reduced fear, stress and anxiety, aided in uniformity in approach to assessments by individual campuses and assisted students in understanding what was expected.

Recommendation

Clinical Assessment Scenario video will remain. Clinical Assessment scenarios will be assessed in the same manner.

Feedback from Student Unit and Teaching Evaluation Feedback, Self-Reflection, Staff Feedback.

Feedback

Residential School numbers too large on several campuses.

Recommendation

Requests will be made for smaller class sizes.

Feedback from Student Unit and Teaching Evaluation Feedback, Self-Reflection.

Feedback

Residential Schools all crammed into first six weeks of term with majority of students not commencing or attending placement until Term 3. Many students complained of attending residential school 4-6 months prior to attending placement.

Recommendation

Requests will be made for more residential schools of smaller numbers to be spread out across the entire term. This will allow for students on later placements to attend later residential schools that are closer to when they attend placement.

Term Specific Information

Registration, Graduation and Commencement of Graduate Positions

It is important to understand that you do not have to attend a graduation ceremony in order to apply for registration as a nurse (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (AHPRA).

Registration as a nurse (Division 1) with AHPRA - An online graduate service is available on the AHPRA website for final year students in approved programs of study. You can apply for registration four to six weeks before completing your Bachelor of Nursing. Once you have completed all requirements that deem you eligible for registration as a nurse (Division 1), your name will be forwarded by the School to AHPRA to enable you to be registered as quickly as possible.

Graduation ceremonies are a formal celebration of completion of your Bachelor of Nursing with your family and friends, NB: graduation is not a requirement to be eligible to register as a nurse.

Please note that some students may not be eligible to attend a graduation until next year due to potential delayed assessment items, such as outstanding clinical placement due to illness or other unavoidable situations however please understand that this will not impact on your ability to apply for registration as a nurse (Division 1) once your grades have been certified.

So that your student group can graduate and celebrate together, we strongly suggest that you apply for graduation ceremonies scheduled in the middle of the next year when all students will have had the chance to receive their results and you are able to celebrate together.

Recency of Practice

Please note that if you are a Recency of Practice student returning to the Bachelor of Nursing after a break of more than 12 months you may be required to attend further clinical learning sessions prior to commencement of NURS13136.

Due to the unprecedented situation with the coronavirus, the simulation assessment activity and the compulsory on-campus attendance for NURS13136 must now be changed. The 24 hours of compulsory face to face residential clinical learning sessions have now been transitioned to virtual zoom sessions during Term 2 2020. The theory of skills will be explained and demonstrated through online resources. All the activities in the clinical learning manual will be discussed during the zoom sessions. There is an expectation that each student will actively participate in all activities within the online learning environment.

All students will be allocated an online residential school to attend.

Online residential school attendance is compulsory and attendance will be recorded.

It will be expected that each student will read all the information within the Moodle site to assist them during the ZOOM sessions before attending their allocated online residential school.

Six hours are allocated to online residential school activities.  It is the student's responsibility to attend and engage in additional ZOOM sessions to meet the 24-hour requirement.  Two-hour ZOOM sessions will be held daily Monday through Thursday from week 3 to week 12, 9 am-11 am. Attendance will be recorded for each student.

Not meeting the 24-hour requirement will result in a fail grade for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

1 Practical and Written Assessment

Assessment Title
Assessment 1: Clinical Simulation and Progress Notes

Task Description

This assessment consists of clinical simulation, debrief, and completion of patient progress notes utilising the SOAPIE format.

You are required to attend a three (3) day on-line residential school prior to commencing your clinical placement.

This residential school provides the opportunity for you to refine your theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in the clinical learning space.

During the residential school, you will undertake an online clinical simulation assessment within a simulated environment.

The simulation consists of the following stages:

1. You will be provided with a clinical scenario in your role as a final year student nurse and required to respond. This will be held online with your allocated lecturer.

2. After participating in the clinical scenario you will be provided with an opportunity to debrief and identify areas that require further learning you will also receive confidential feedback on your performance in the simulation.

3. You will document a set of progress noted based on the clinical scenario you participated in. These notes will be from your perspective as the student nurse in the scenario.

You are required to achieve a 100% Pass for the Clinical Assessment. You may have three (3) attempts to pass this assessment should you require it.

The second (2nd) attempt will be negotiated with your lecturer and if required, the third (3rd) attempt will also be negotiated with your lecturer. This will occur during your residential school prior to placement. After each attempt you will be provided with feedback on your performance and assistance in identifying and remediating the deficits that lead to the reason for failure. The Unit Coordinator will be consulted prior to the third and final attempt.

If you are unsuccessful on the third attempt, you will not be able to proceed to clinical placement and will receive a Fail grade for the unit.

Important – Point 4.21 of the CQUniversity Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework) states: In a pass/fail unit, students who fail a single assessment or who fail a pass/fail component of a graded unit will be deemed to have failed that unit.

Assessment Due Date

The original clinical simulation assessment marking criteria is to remain with the CQUniveristy Academic. Progress notes are to be submitted via Moodle within 3 business days of Residential School completion.

Return Date to Students

The clinical simulation and the debrief result, will be determined at the end of the Residential School session/s. Confidential feedback will be given to students post simulation and debrief. The progress notes will be marked within 21 business days of submission to Moodle, in conjunction with the scanned clinical simulation assessment marking sheet.

The Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) for Nursing Students forms the basis of the marking criteria. You will be required to meet each criteria of these standards. These criteria will be particular to each specific clinical scenario.

While the clinical assessment marking criteria is provided to students prior to their clinical assessment to assist in learning, the marking criteria cannot be taken into the assessment by the student. Once the marking criteria has been completed with confidential feedback given to the student, it is to be signed by the academic staff and student, dated and the student may take a copy of the completed criteria, but the original is to remain with the academic staff.

You are required to participate in both the clinical simulation and the debrief to pass the assessment.

You are required to complete progress notes relating to the clinical simulation scenario you were assessed and passed in. You must complete these notes utilising the SOAPIE format and submit them to the appropriate assessment tab within the Moodle site using TurnItIn.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
