General Information

Overview

This unit introduces you to fundamental aspects of podiatry practice. You will learn about the standards and codes of practice of a podiatrist. You will also set up your clinical workspace, apply infection control principles and occupational health and safety standards. You will learn to take a patient medical history and conduct general assessments of the foot and lower limb in a simulated multi-disciplinary clinical setting.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge in preparing the podiatry work space, based on Infection Control, Occupational Health and Safety and Workplace Health and Safety legislation
  3. Conduct a basic podiatric assessment in a professional manner, demonstrating ethical, culturally sensitive and inclusive behaviour
  4. Discuss the basic aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation and treatment of common neurovascular, nail and skin disorders in podiatry practice
  5. Demonstrate manual skills using general podiatry equipment in a safe manner.

2 Presentation

Assessment Title
Presentation (40%)

Task Description

You will be required to provide a PowerPoint oral presentation worth 40% covering content covered from weeks 1-8. You will be required to select one out of three topics from a list provided to you. You will need to let your lecturer know the topic that you have chosen latest by Thursday of Week 9 (15th September 2022, 5:00 pm) via email.

Your oral presentation will be up to 15 minutes long with a Question and Answer session of 5 minutes. You can choose to present 'live' or play a pre-recorded video presentation during the lecture time in Week 10. You must be present to answer questions during the Question and Answer session.

After your presentation, you must upload your PowerPoint slides on Moodle latest by Thursday of Week 10 (22nd September 2022, 11:59 pm) as proof of submission and completion.

Task Description

During your 2-day practical session in Week 12, you will be required to complete the tasks as set out in your PODI11001 Practical Manual 2022.
Please print out your practical manual and bring it with you during the 2-day practical session.


As you complete the tasks, please ensure that your practical facilitator awards marks, signs and dates all the tasks you complete in your Practical Manual. The signed-off tasks within your Practical Manual will need to be scanned and uploaded to Moodle latest by Friday of Week 12 (7th October 2022, 11:59 pm) as proof of completion of this assessment task.
