Overview
In this unit, you will gain an understanding of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of chronic and acute sports related injuries of the lower limb. You will develop practical skills regarding the assessment and management of common podiatric sporting injuries using patient-centered evidence-based practice. You will also develop an understanding of the role of podiatry in a multi-disciplinary sports management team.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Pre-requisites: PODI12010 Advanced Anatomy and Podiatric Biomechanics. To be enrolled in this unit, students must be enrolled in CB86 Bachelor of Podiatry Practice (Honours) course. Co-requisite: PODI13008 Clinical Biomechanics of the Lower Limb
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Feedback from In Class
Students enjoyed practicing their hands-on skills during the two-day professional practice placement, but would have preferred to have this opportunity earlier in the term
It is recommended that practical, hands-on classes be implemented earlier in the term
Feedback from Unit Coordinator self-reflection
This unit would benefit from integration of content related to orthopaedic assessment and clinical management of pathologies occurring above the foot and the ankle to better align with the broader scope of practice of a Podiatrist.
It is recommended that more content related to the assessment and management of injuries affecting the leg, knee, thigh, and low-back be implemented

The weighted on-campus activity would be more appropriately assessed as a pass/fail, competency-based, assessment item
It is recommended that the weighted on-campus activity be removed and replaced with an Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to promote authentic assessment of students practical and theoretical skills

1 Presentation
Students will be required to provide a PowerPoint oral presentation worth 30% covering content covered from Weeks 1-4.
All students will be required to select a topic of their choice from a list of provided foot and ankle injuries. The topic of the oral presentation will be discussed and finalised with the lecturer at the beginning of the term. The oral presentation will be 10 minutes long with a Question and Answer session. This is an individual assessment task.
Week 6 Tuesday (18 Apr 2023) 3:00 pm AEST
Students are to present their powerpoint presentation during the tutorial time and must upload their powerpoint slides by 5pm AEST Tuesday 18th April, 2023.
This assessment will be marked according to a rubric which will be made available to students via Moodle.

2 On-campus Activity
Students will be expected to complete a series of tasks found in the Sports Practical Manual.
The manual will be made available to students via moodle early in the term. Each task will be completed during tutorial sessions and students are required to complete all tasks in order to pass this assessment item. More details and information regarding the on campus activities will be made available at the start of term.
Week 12 Friday (2 June 2023) 5:00 pm AEST
The completes Sports Practical Manual must be submitted to Moodle by 5pm AEST Friday Week 12.
Students are required to satisfactorily complete each of the tasks in the Sports Practical Manual under the supervision of their educator by the assessment due date. Your supervisor will sign-off satisfactory completion of each task and will provide feedback for unsatisfactory performance. Failure to satisfactorily complete each of the tasks in the Sports Practical Manual will receive a Fail grade for this assessment item.

3 Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)
This assessment task will assess your practical and theoretical skills in the assessment and management of a range of orthopaedic conditions affecting the lower extremity, pelvis, and lumbar spine. This assessment task will occur during the usual lecture and tutorial time in Week 12 according to an assessment schedule which will be made available via Moodle.

Students will be marked against a marking guide designed specifically for this assessment task.

4 In-class Test(s)
The in-class test will be in the form of a closed book test covering content from Weeks 1-11. There will be a combination of multiple choice, short answer and essay questions. The in-class test will be 120 minutes long.
Review/Exam Week Tuesday (6 June 2023) 1:00 pm AEST
This test will be completed in-class, on-campus, during the lecture time (1:00 - 3:00pm AEST).
Students will be marked according to an answer sheet specific to this test.
