Overview
This unit will introduce you to social work and human services in Australia and a changing context for human services within the information society. You will develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of social work and welfare work within the Australian welfare state and how services are currently organised and delivered. You should be able to conceptualise social justice, inequality and marginalisation and their relevance to professional practice in social work and welfare work. You will understand the nature and goals of social work and human services as helping professions within this context, what characterises these professions and their fields and methods of practice. Particular emphasis will be placed on how access to information and the skills required to use information effectively can be an important dimension in addressing disadvantage, oppressive power and exclusion in the post industrial society. You are required to attend compulsory residential school or compulsory weekly on-campus tutorials in order to achieve specific learning outcomes of the unit.

Offerings For Term 1 - 2018
Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Residential Schools
This unit has a Compulsory Residential School for distance mode students and the details are:

Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Overview
Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.
All University policies are available on the CQUniversity Policy site.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Student emails and 'Have your say'
There were some students who felt that the requirements for assessment were unclear. There was also a suggestion that it would be beneficial to receive feedback earlier in the term.
There have been changes made to the assessment items. The weighting of some assessments has changed and the first written assessment will be three online posts rather than an essay.

All students are required to attend compulsory on-campus sessions. This will either be at a residential in Noosa or Geraldton OR weekly tutorials in Rockhampton or Bundaberg. This is a requirement of accreditation with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and is non-negotiable.
1 Online discussion forum
For this first assessment, you are asked to think about two (2) organisations you may like to work at and provide a brief overview of these organisations and the work provided by the social/human service workers in these organisations.
The online forum is designed as a 'Q & A' forum so you will not see other responses until you submit your own. Your posts will be available for all students to read so please refrain from posting information of a personal nature.

Moodle will match your responses with the correct Harvard (author-date) format. Each question will be worth 1% of marks toward your final grade.

In Assessment 3, you were asked to list and describe the key values of social work and the ethical foundations of the profession. For this online post, you are asked to look further at the profession and your beginning views of social work. You are asked to provide an online post that provides a description of the core knowledge that informs social work practice (for example, social justice, inequality) and the generic skills needed for competent social work practice. You will also need to provide a reflection about your ‘fit’ in the profession.
Your post will need to be informed by academic literature provided on Moodle and though independent research.

5 Written Assessment
Your Role
As a social worker in education, you have been assigned a project to assist the settlement of refugees and asylum seekers who have arrived in your hometown with the goal of providing them with an orientation to the Australian welfare system. Informed by academic evidence about the specific needs of refugees and asylum seekers, you are to decide on which services and resources they may need.
You are strongly encouraged to locate yourself in your own neighbourhood, town or city and identify the people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who have been settled there most recently. Alternatively, you can look at the nearest neighbouring place that has hosted refugees and asylum seekers.
Please note: While you are asked to choose a particular location, the aim of this assessment is to provide information about the welfare system and supports available at this location, it is not meant to be about tourist locations.

On-campus learning is a compulsory component of this unit. You are required to attend a three-day residential in Noosa or Geraldton OR weekly tutorials in Rockhampton or Bundaberg. You are required to complete a log of hours as evidence of this. Your on-campus tutor will provide you with this log of hours and you are required to sign in for each session. Your tutor will submit this log of hours on your behalf. In order to meet the requirements of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), you can not miss any more than one 2 hour session.

All students are expected to be involved in the group activities and contribute to group presentations. More information about this will be presented at on campus sessions. You are not expected to or required to work on the group activities outside of on-campus hours.
You must pass this assessment to pass the unit. Failure to pass this assessment will result in the final grade of 'Fail' for the entire unit.

- Team Work
As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
