Assessment Grading

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Previous Student Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

I appreciated that the unit coordinators hosted regular interactive Zoom sessions, which included assessment task discussions and useful PowerPoint presentations. Furthermore, each week’s content was amply resourced. The unit coordinators were also extremely prompt and thorough with their responses to student queries.

Recommendation

This is a task that will continue as those who accessed these ZOOM opportunities were more enabled to do well in this unit.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

The unit is very broad and I felt a little bombarded with so much information over so many areas.

Recommendation

We appreciate that the amount of information in this unit can be a lot for many. We are working on creating smaller bite size information options to allow those who are overloaded with information to take on smaller amounts and for those who want more to explore all options.

Feedback from SUTE

Feedback

Scope of Social Work Practice in Australia is an introductory unit. Perhaps it is too early in the course structure to have assessment pieces that focus on social work assessment, intervention, and evaluation. These are not terms that have been introduced yet. If they are to remain as part of assessment tasks, perhaps one week should be dedicated to unpacking/exploring these aspects of practice. However, including communication as a topic of investigate seems reasonable as this is an aspect of social work practice that is covered in the first year of the course.

Recommendation

This is excellent feedback and is being taken on board to be included in 2022 more guidance around terminology and reducing some of the expectations for the tasks.

Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Compare social work fields of practice within different contexts in Australia
  2. Describe social work processes required for effective communication, assessment, intervention and evaluation
  3. Explore the issues that impact on social work practice
  4. Reflect on the social work ethical issues that have emerged in exploring different social work fields of practice.

The Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS 2020) discuss the importance of students gaining an understanding of the experience of individuals, groups and communities within a range of different fields of practice settings (ASWEAS Appendix 2.1). This unit provides a beginning understanding of social work in general and within these practice settings. It will allow students to understand some of the complex issues that social workers are involved in within their practice. Also, it will commence the process for students to assess whether their value base aligns with that of the social work profession.

Task Description

Aim

The aim of this assessment is to enhance your understanding of social work practice in a range of contexts through reviewing the literature while also developing your research and referencing skills.

Instructions

Developing research skills is an important component of the social work discipline. It is a skill that is used in direct practice as well as within research and policy development. These skills are also critical to your study and your ability to familiarise yourself with quality material that is available on a particular subject or topic.

For this assessment you are required to read 3 of the 10 peer reviewed journal articles provided and research one article from a social work field of practice that interests you. A list of databases is available in Moodle to assist your search. You are then required to prepare an annotated bibliography in set format. Based on what you have read, you will need to include the following elements:

· Provide a summary or description of the article’s main points

· Include some of the key social issues being discussed in this article

· Consider the relevance or usefulness of this article to social work practice

· What recommendations, findings or conclusions are drawn from the research or article?

Requirements

· Using APA 7th edition referencing style, provide a complete and accurate reference for each of the articles included

· Each annotation must be in your own words and should not include any quotes or excerpts from the article

· Each of the four (4) annotations must be a minimum of 200 words and maximum of 300 words

· Articles must be listed in alphabetical order

· Your chosen article must consider scholarly validity, recency and reliability. Please see Moodle for more information on reviewing literature

· If your annotation includes mention of work that has been referenced in the article, you must include this as a supplementary reference

· The CQUniversity Academic Learning Centre has an online APA Referencing Style Guide.

· Your assessment must be submitted via Moodle in Microsoft Word format only

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
