Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Compare social work fields of practice within different contexts in Australia
  2. Describe social work processes required for effective communication, assessment, intervention and evaluation
  3. Explore the issues that impact on social work practice
  4. Reflect on the social work ethical issues that have emerged in exploring different social work fields of practice.

The Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS 2020) discuss the importance of students gaining an understanding of the experience of individuals, groups and communities within a range of different fields of practice settings (ASWEAS Appendix 2.1). This unit provides a beginning understanding of social work in general and within these practice settings. It will allow students to understand some of the complex issues that social workers are involved in within their practice. Also, it will commence the process for students to assess whether their value base aligns with that of the social work profession.

Assessment Tasks

1 Annotated bibliography

Assessment Title
Social Work Practice Contexts

Task Description

Length

You will review 3 sources. Each annotation must be a minimum of 200 words and should not exceed 300 words.  You will also include a reflection of 300 words.

Aim

The aim of this assessment is to enhance your understanding of social work processes in a range of practice contexts through reviewing the literature while also developing your research and referencing skills.  The reflection component is to connect your experiences, values and knowledge with the research material and the research process.

Instructions

Developing research skills is an important component of the social work discipline. It is a skill that is used in direct practice as well as within research and policy development. These skills are also critical to your study and your ability to familiarise yourself with quality material that is available on a particular subject or topic.  In this assessment, you can use ChatGPT as a support tool to help you review the literature.

For this assessment you are required to locate and read 3 peer reviewed journal articles focused on a social work field of practice that interests you.  You are required to conduct your search through the CQUni library and choose from articles published in the last two years (since January 2022). You are then required to prepare an annotated bibliography in set format. Based on what you have read, you will need to include the following elements:

•            In your words, provide a summary or description of the article’s main points

•            Include some of the key social issues being discussed in this article

•            Consider the relevance or usefulness of this article to social work practice

•            What recommendations, findings or conclusions are drawn from the research or article?  What are the implications for social work practice?

You are also required to include a reflection on why you selected the three articles and what were the new insights that you have gained from each of the articles or how the content challenged your thinking.  Please also include reflections on what has challenged you the most in the research process.  If you have used ChatGPT reflect on its uses and limitations as a support tool.  You may want to consider how the information provided relates to your understanding of the social work processes and any challenges that have arisen for you around using ChatGPT or the content of its input.

Format

•            Using APA 7th edition referencing style, provide a complete and accurate reference for each of the articles included

•            Each annotation must be in your own words and should not include any quotes or excerpts from the article

•            Each annotation must be a minimum of 200 words, maximum 300 words

•            Articles must be listed in alphabetical order

•            Your chosen article must consider scholarly validity, recency and reliability. Please see Moodle for more information on reviewing literature

•            If your annotation includes mention of work that has been referenced in the article, you must include this as an additional reference

Requirements

•            Use a conventional and legible size 12 font, such as Times New Roman, with 2.0 line spacing and 2.54cm page margins (standard pre-set margin in Microsoft Word).

•            Include page numbers on the top right side of each page in a header.

•            Use formal academic language.

•            Use the seventh edition American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style. The CQUniversity Academic Learning Centre has an online CQU APA Referencing Style Guide.

•            The word count is considered from the first word of the introduction to the last word of the conclusion. The word count excludes the reference list but includes in-text references and direct quotations.

Resources

•            The quality and credibility of your sources are important.

•            We recommend that you access your discipline specific library guide: Social Work and Community Services Guide.

•            We recommend you use EndNote to manage your citations and reference list. More information on how to use EndNote is available at the CQUniversity Library website.

•            For information on academic communication please go to the Academic Learning Centre Moodle site. The Academic Communication section has many helpful resources including information for students with English as a second language.

Generative AI

•            Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) includes a range of computer programs that use data sets and computer-generated information to create new content. For this assessment you may use Gen-AI to help you to understand the question, explain research concepts and check references are in the correct format. If you use Gen-AI, you should include a statement that declares that you have used Gen-AI and how you have used Gen-AI.

•            You should not use Gen-AI in the creation or critical analysis of the content or to write or rewrite any part of your assessment.

•            You should be aware that Gen-AI output can be incorrect and can include fictitious references and sources.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
