Core Structure

The Master of Information Technology course provides students with the option of studying one of three majors. Please refer to the detail in your chosen major for details of both core and major units required to be successfully undertaken for completion of your course of study.

Students are required to complete one of the following two streams: Internship or Capstone.

Some units are offered in Term 3 to help students complete the course earlier, particularly for those students intending to take the internship stream. Students are strongly advised to consult course advisers at the beginning of each term regarding the units they intend to take to ensure they can complete the course within the shortest possible time.

Mobile Application Development Major

To be eligible for this unit you must pass all of your units at the first attempt, apply for the internship and undergo a series of interviews with prospective host organisations. Generally, internship students will spend 32 hours per week for 10 consecutive weeks with the internship host organisation applying the knowledge you have gained over the course of your study before returning to campus for the presentation of your learning journey. Assessments will need to be completed throughout the term.

The internship is taken in the last term of study, and to assist internship students complete all units before the last study term, some units are offered in all three teaching terms. You are strongly advised to consult course advisers at the beginning of each term regarding the units you intend to take to ensure you can complete the course within the shortest possible time.

If you choose this option, you will be enrolled in the unit COIT220276 Postgraduate ICT Internship once you have secured a host organisation.

Capstone stream students must complete the following compulsory unit:

COIT20272 Mobile Application Development Project

If you choose this option, you will apply your knowledge gained over your course of study in a simulated environment.

To complete this stream you can enrol yourself into your discipline capstone unit - COIT20272 Mobile Application Development Project. This unit is taken in the last term of study and you can also complete two elective units in this same term.

Information Systems and Analysis Minor

Number of units: 4 Total credit points: 24


This minor can be taken by students who have chosen the following: Software Design and Development major; Mobile Application Development major or Networks and Information Security major. You must complete the two units COIT20250 and COIT20251 then choose two units from the Optional Units listing. Students must begin the minor with the unit COIT20250 which is the prerequisite to units COIT20251, COIT20252, COIT20253 and COIT20255. If opting to take this minor you should take COIT20250 in your second term of study, COIT20251 in your third term of study and the final two units from the option listing in the fourth term of study. Note there may be some flexibility in the order the last three units are taken if you choose to study in Term 3. If opting to take this minor you should take COIT20261 in your second term of study, COIT20269 in your third term of study and the final two units from the option listing in the fourth term of study. Internship Opportunity

Students in the Master of Information Systems are able to apply for an internship. Please refer to the Moodle site "SET Internships" for more information. You will undertake the internship in place of doing your discipline capstone unit.

Elective Opportunities

There is an opportunity for students to undertake a minor from other disciplines in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) or the Master of Information Systems (MIS). Please refer to the handbook for information. Otherwise select your four electives from the Electives Listing. In addition to the minors in the MIT or selecting four general electives from the Electives Listing, you can complete the following three units from the Graduate Certificate in Project Management, plus one general elective.

You should note you may be required to enrol in some units by Distance.
