Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces the principles and practices relevant to the social licence to operate in the agricultural industry. You will explore how agricultural industries are dealing with the increase in global food and fibre demand while facing social and political scrutiny to cease or alter certain practices. In this unit you will examine how the agricultural industry can respond to these pressures to maintain their social licence to operate. You will use case studies to consider a range of current and emerging social licence challenges in agriculture such as animal husbandry practices, water use and contamination, environmental stewardship and the use of agri-chemicals. You will gain an understanding of the levels of the social licence to operate and the tools to measure this. You will also learn how to develop a plan for an agricultural business which will allow them to maintain their social licence to operate in a changing world.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Assessment 2 weightings - group vs individual component.
Assessment 2 is worth 60%. In T1 2020, 5% of this was associated with a self and peer assessment task, 15% to an individual presentation and 40% to a written group assessment. This distribution of marks, particularly the large percentage assigned to the group component, seemed to have the impact of medializing overall student grades such that students who excelled in individual assessment tasks were significantly disadvantaged by the lower group component mark. In the self and peer assessment tasks, some students commented on the inequity in contributions to the group assessment task among their team members. To overcome this, steps should be taken to either ensure better participation in the group assessment component, or to reduce the weighting of group component of Assessment 2.
Action Taken
This distribution of weighting was amended for 2021 with lower weighting for the group component, however this should again be reduced for 2022.

Students needed more information and assistance with Assessment 1
Students felt that Assessment 1 required some more information and clarity. To ensure that students are clearer on the requirements of Assessment 1, a tutorial in weeks 1 or 2 should be dedicated to explaining and discussing this assessment. An exemplar should also be made available on Moodle.
Action Taken
Students received more information for Assessment 1, including in-class discussions on the assessment task.

Assessment Weighting
The group component on Assessment 2 had a medializing impact on student grades. This should be remedied through an adjustment to both the overall assessment weighting and the weighting of the group component of that assessment. The decreased weighting for this assessment should be offset through an increase in the Assessment 1 piece, offered for the first time in 2022.
