General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will develop your professional capacity and prepare you to enter your chosen career. In this unit you will either complete a supervised work placement or undertake a short research project relevant to sustainable crop production. If you select the research project option you must have a GPA of 5.0 or higher. You will have the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills attained in your degree in the professional work or research environment. You will complete a minimum of 160 hours, equivalent to 4 weeks, and a maximum of 300 hours. Prior to commencement, you will work with your industry supervisor to design a placement program that is beneficial to the organisation and meets the academic requirements of the unit. To undertake a research project, you will work with an academic supervisor on a project that has been approved by the unit coordinator.

Prerequisite

Students to complete 48 credit points prior to enrolment.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Difficulty organising and getting a suitable site for work placement.
Recommendation
The Unit Coordinator and the WIL office will continue to provide more support to students in order to secure suitable sites for their work placements well in advance. Students are encouraged to commence their arrangements for work placement in good time.
Action Taken
Most students were well prepared but extra support was provided to students who needed help with arrangements. This was positively highlighted in SUTE.

Misalignment between assessment due dates and commencement of work placement.
Recommendation
Students who are unable to commence work placement in the second week of term for any reason are requested to contact the unit coordinator. The potential impact of this delay on the ability of the students to complete assessments in time will be discussed and options explored.
Action Taken
Assessments were updated and deadlines were adjusted in 2020 to better align work placement commencement dates and assessment due dates. Nevertheless, many extension requests were granted because of COVID-19 derived complications.
