BLAR12036 - Building Design 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Building Design 1 will introduce you to creative design as a process of investigation, critical observation and experimentation. You will be introduced to the client briefing process as well as to basic aesthetic and sustainable design principles and their application to the design of low rise residential and commercial buildings. By engaging in a series of short design-based projects that involve critiquing, listening consciously, researching and creatively solving design problems, you will learn how to create spatial environments that are conducive to human well-being and that meet stakeholder requirements.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Portfolio 20%
2. Portfolio 40%
3. Portfolio 40%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student Evaluations
Feedback
A busy unit that requires students to keep to a study routine to stay on top of the learning material.
Recommendation
It is recommended that students have completed the level 1 units prior to engaging with this level 2 unit and set aside the recommended study time on a weekly basis.
Action Taken
Students were advised to make a plan to set aside regular, weekly study times for this unit and to ensure that they attended feedback sessions for the assessments.

Feedback
The feedback sessions on the draft designs are really helpful.
Recommendation
The feedback sessions will continue to be offered to support students improve their design skills and apply theoretical content to their designs.
Action Taken
The feedback sessions continue to be offered to support students apply theoretical knowledge to their design projects.
Source: Student Evaluations
Feedback
Students reported that the subject is very large compared to the other units in the course.
Recommendation
It is recommended that a review is undertaken at course level to explore ways to address this issue.
