General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces you to the roles and responsibilities of being a professional practitioner in the building and construction sector through consideration of professional ethics; personal actions and liabilities; and stakeholder collaboration and involvement. In this unit you will also gain an understanding and be taught the application of organisational psychology - theory and practice; project management and control; financial management; construction business planning; trust and general accounts; contemporary office management practices; establishing quality management systems and identifying opportunities to implement social innovation practice.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 1 - 2021 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 3.8 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 33.33% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

The main themes from the student feedback were that the lecturer was engaging and helpful. The text was relevant, but the assignments need to be more aligned with the text and less weighting on the first assignment to ensure this assignment provides an indication of how students were progressing early. Some students noted that the specific behavioural language difficult to comprehend and the Moodle site was difficult to navigate.
1. Assignments will be reviewed in terms of assessment weighting. 2. Assignments to relate to the prescribed text. 3. Lecture 1 to focus on behavioral terminology. This is to be included as part of the first lecturer. 4. Moodle site to be reviewed
Action Taken
The recommendation of 2020 has been implemented in part due to the change in lecturers. This recommendation will be ongoing in 2022 by the current CQU lecturer.

The analytical data was generally positive with a few exceptions. The general student reviews were that the unit content was very broad in the management content and associated assignments. The unit probably needs to be revamped with a focus on management from a project perspective and the office management for construction managers, designers and building surveyors. The use of multi-information platforms e.g. was confusing to students and they generally felt one source of communication provided a clearer and more direct comms.
A review of the unit with a focus on more specific management techniques associated with the onsite and the office environment management for construction managers, designers and building surveyors. Assignment to align with the change in focus and one clear line of communication for student clarity.
