General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit builds upon students' knowledge of the foundational principles of human and built-environment relationships. Through exploring theories and principles of environmental psychology and social design, students develop critical knowledge of the symbiotic relationships between human and the physical surroundings and the importance of human-focused, inclusive, socially and culturally relevant and empathetic, and environmentally sustainable design solutions. Online studio-based activities, series of case study analysis, and spatial design exercises support student to develop skills in spatial design research methods and to critically evaluate design solutions that go beyond merely addressing basic functionality to include the concerns for improved quality of human life, equality, social responsibility and environmental sustainability. Through engaging in project-based learning, students develop creative design and visual communication skills and design spaces that promote human health, well-being, and a sense of community and belonging.

Prerequisites: BLAR12036 AND (BLAR11045 OR ENEG11005)  

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback:
Students found case studies of community center buildings provided in the Moodle to be useful in completing Assessment 3.

Recommendation:
The teaching team ensures that they provide case study buildings for students to support their creative design processes.

Action Taken:
In 2024 offering, a Zoom session was dedicated to review case studies of community centers.

Feedback:
There was a suggestion that the teamwork component is Assessment 2 to be replaced with an emphasis on participation in the online design critique sessions of online forums.

Recommendation:
Review the strategies to further support online design critiques and peer-to-peer feedback on design tasks.

There was a comment about the lecturer being insightful and offering interesting discussion making students to contemplate each new public space they enter.
