Unit Synopsis

This unit will introduce you to the procedures, principles and methods of construction used for complex projects up to "super tall" buildings (over 300m in height) and designated by the National Construction Code (NCC) as being within Building Class 2 to 9. You should have completed an intermediate construction unit to ensure adequate level of entry knowledge. Students who have successfully completed BLAR13049 should not enrol in this unit.

Pre-requisite: BLAR12057 Commercial Construction or BLAR11048 Construction 2.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Several students thought that information to complete the assignment questions was difficult to locate online. Some students dislike the current format with no face to face interaction with the lecturer or any of the other students. Several students preferred to have some direct interaction which they did not have in this unit. Prerecorded lectures are convenient, but some students still prefer the opportunity for a virtual face to face. It should be noted that CQUniversity does not currently offer face to face units in this degree. As suggested by the feedback, the unit was informative and several students found the lecturers to be very supportive and noted that at all times things were explained in a way that was easy to understand and helped them to learn.
Recommendation
CQUniversity does not offer face to face in this unit, BLAR13054. Students are aware of this as the course is advertised as online mode. However, as part of the CQUniversity internal review, this may be a possibility in the future. It may be possible to offer some ZOOM session face to face, however students have access to the lecturer via email and phone.
Action Taken
More ZOOM face to face meetings will assist students in terms of clarification.

Feedback
The student feedback was overall very positive. Some very interesting research on tall buildings, noting the lecturer’s knowledge and real-world examples and current examples and relevant to the profession. Some students suggested that more depth of topic was required, however, the suspicion is that these students are more experienced.
Recommendation
Given the high student feedback score ranging from 4.4 lowest to 4.8 then there was just some minor adjustment in terms of increased content for NCC and associated fire safety.

  1. Plan the temporary works, particularly scaffolding, formwork and falsework and plant selection processes used for complex or "super tall" construction.
  2. Describe the functions, materials and details of the major components. the waste management strategies used and the regulatory inspections made when constructing a complex or "super tall" project.
  3. Diagnose and plan the rectification of common building faults.
  4. Explain the issues encountered by complex or "super tall" buildings including funding, ownership, design and construction.
  5. Discuss the development and implementation of innovative building practices.
