BMSC12003 - Haematology and Transfusion Science

General Information

Unit Synopsis

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to discuss fundamentals of haematology and transfusion science, including erythrocyte, leukocyte, reticulocyte and platelet morphology, enumeration and function. Skills in enumeration of blood cells and tests of haematological function will be developed during practical exercises. You will learn to contrast normal blood cell function with disorders of haemostasis affecting blood clotting and iron metabolism affecting blood cell numbers.

Pre-requisite: BMSC11002 Human Body Systems 2 AND  (BUSN11016 Introduction to Study and Professional Practice OR BMSC11003 Introduction to Medical Science)

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Inclusion of 'distillations' of learning materials in tutorials
Recommendation
Tutorials to be re-worked to provide a distillation of the topic of the week emphasising critical points. The lectures to be 'scaled back' to include less 'additional information'. This can be provided as optional additional material in the form of readings and video clips on the Moodle site.

Lecture recordings were too long.
Recommendation
Consideration of revising the delivery of the material from a 2-hour lecture to a series of pre-recorded, shorter, 20 minute focused videos to cover the same weekly content. A 'live' 1-hour tutorial would continue to provide an opportunity for engagement.
