BUSN20021 - Business Research Project

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Researching business problems is an important part of professional practice and being a successful business manager and leader. Business Research Project is an independent 12cp research unit that draws upon your area of specialisation and knowledge of research methods. You will conduct independent research in an appropriate area of relevance to your specific Masters Course. This unit requires independence and autonomy in review and analysis of literature and secondary data sources. You will identify the topic, review existing literature, develop the research questions, define the methodology, collect and analyse the data, and write up the final business project, culminating in conclusions that highlight your answer to your research questions and recommendations for practice and future research.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Self-reflection based on recent enrolment statistics.
Feedback
This is a unit of particular relevance to students with an interest in research, and it can provide students with an opportunity to carry out an independent research project of a larger size than currently available in postgraduate capstone units like BUSN20019. However, many students seem unaware of this option.
Recommendation
The availability of this unit should be promoted to students as early as their initial Orientation, alongside the promotion of the equally weighted 12 credit point internship option.
Action Taken
The Postgraduate Orientation slides have been containing reference to the unit for a number of years, and will continue to do so in future.

Feedback
The previously available BUSN20019 (Professional Project), which allowed students to complete a small independent research project, will be discontinued in 2021. As such, this unit will become the sole opportunity for students to experience an independent research project (e.g. if they consider a research Masters or PhD).
Recommendation
More structure and learning material should be provided on the Moodle site to complement students' independent study. Proven material from the discontinued BUSN20019 can be used as a basis for this.
Action Taken
Nil.
