Unit Synopsis

Professional Business Communication introduces students to elements of effective oral communication for participation in business meetings, presenting training sessions and for constructing written communications to both internal and external clients. Self reflection and peer assessment is emphasised as a tool for self management and the development of team work and interpersonal skills appropriate for future success in a professional career.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of effective communication to the business environment and to their own career success.
  2. Prepare written business communications for both internal and external clients using appropriate sentence structure, spelling and grammar.
  3. Understand the link between communication skills and  interpersonal skills for professional networking and effective team work.
  4. Participate in and/or chair a meeting within the workplace.
  5. Present technical information utilising a range of public speaking techniques and appropriate presentation technologies.
  6. Evaluate their own competence with English language and develop an action plan for on-going improvement in communication skills.
