CART11018 - Visual Arts Studio: Semiotics and Design for Visual Artists

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces you to a range of cross-disciplinary approaches to visual communication. These include visual communication theory, design and semiotics (the study of signs). Using a combination of theoretical approaches to visual communication, you will develop creative tools to support your practical efforts as a creative visual artist and use analytical tools to better observe the functioning of mass media imagery and contemporary visual art practices.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
'The practicals' are the best part of this unit.
Recommendation
It is recommended to retain the design tasks associated with assessment one of this unit. It is also recommended that the current structure of introducing and exploring these tasks during the first four of the weekly tutorials should be retained.
Action Taken
The design tasks remained largely the same for 2020 with some refinements made to task descriptions and assessment expectations.

My favourite unit of the degree. Loved the content.
Recommendation
The combination of general design, visual communication and semiotic theory content are complementary. The relationships between these related theories will be largely retained for the next iteration of this unit.

  2. Discuss how design theory, visual communication theory and semiotics can be used to support your creative practice

  4. Explain the process of signification in the context of contemporary visual art practices or mass media imagery and advertising.
