COIT12204 - Web Site Development

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit focuses on the basic technologies and skills required to build business-oriented websites in a .NET environment. You will use ASP.NET and associated technologies to design and build a basic website. The strengths and weaknesses of ASP.NET will be discussed as will alternative .NET development and deployment technologies.

Prerequisite: COIS12036 & (COIT12167 or COIT11237)

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Database issues cause problems with learning material.
Recommendation
The learning resources need updating and the assessment requirements changed to mitigate SQL database problems in future offerings. Also, there needs to be an update to the section on how to set up the ASP.NET project for the latest version of ASP.NET.
Action Taken
This problem has now extended to most parts of the materials.The unit requires redevelopment and 'plastering' will not work to resolve these issues. This is mainly due to the upgrade of Visual Studio software which resulted in the changing of many of the components (e.g., creating a website versus creating a project). Database is just one of the issues highlighted.

Some of the lab activities are lengthy, difficult to complete in the allocated class time and covered in other units.
Recommendation
Split some of the tutorials/lab exercises in two labs such as the database, roles and membership labs. Delete some of the tutorials such as CSS tutorials. A redevelopment of the unit is required.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the key web development technologies available to the .NET developer
  2. Design a business-oriented web site that has a consistent look and feel
  3. Use an integrated suite of software tools in the development of a business-oriented web site
  4. Examine the issues involved in developing and maintaining a web site for a small business
  5. Assess the likely business impact of emerging web deployment technologies.
