General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with the skills and knowledge required to design wired and wireless networks using the Top-Down Network Design methodology. The unit equips you with the approaches used to gather business and technical requirements, and analyse them together with the security policies of the organisation. The unit includes campus, branch, WAN, wireless and Internet edge designs as well as testing and documentation.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Students do not get formal feedback early in the term.
Review assessments and their due date to introduce formal feedback earlier in the term.

Assessment 1 due date was moved to Monday of Week 7 instead of Monday of Week 9 which allowed to provide formal feedback to students earlier in the term.

Some parts of the workshop contents are out of date and should be updated with the latest networking applications.
Review the workshop materials and update.
Action Taken
The unit delivery format was changed in Term 1 2023. Instead of a weekly three hour workshop, a weekly two hour lecture followed by a two hour tutorial were introduced. Latest technologies to be considered in wireless network design and WAN design were discussed in the lectures.

Prepare lecture slides containing some examples with details of the latest technologies to be used in wireless LAN and wireless WAN design technologies and make them available on Moodle.

Include prototype implementation of designed network.
Review the assessments to include prototype implementation on the cloud and/or using in-house hardware available in campus networking labs. Use of Cisco Packet Tracer networking simulation tool is another option to consider.

  4. Design a network by applying the top-down network design methodology
  5. Justify that the designed network satisfies the requirements.

Australian Computer Society (ACS) recognises the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA). SFIA is in use in over 100 countries and provides a widely used and consistent definition of ICT skills. SFIA is increasingly being used when developing job descriptions and role profiles.

The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Framework defines knowledge, skills and tasks needed to perform various cyber security roles. Developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the NICE Framework is used by organisations to plan their workforce, including recruit into cyber security positions.
