General Information

Unit Synopsis

On completion of this unit, students should be able to use a word processor to format the layout of an academic essay and a report. The students should be able to use a spreadsheet to complete a workbook, create simple formula, apply simple functions as well as create and format charts. The students should be able to use the Internet, negotiate a Learning Management System and communicate using email at an academic level. Students should also be able to create a basic Power Point presentation appropriate for university units.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Non-award unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Some assessment instructions are difficult to understand.
Recommendation
Continue to review, revise and reformat assessment instructions to simplify and address ease of readability.
Action Taken
All assessment instructions have been overhauled to make them more readable and easier to follow. Some assessments have also been updated and renewed.

Very positive feedback on the study materials, ease of navigation through the unit and especially the videos.
Recommendation
Continue to revise the Moodle site to ensure ease of navigation, along with updates to videos as needed.
Action Taken
The Moodle site has been changed to Tiles view, and the layout of each weekly block has been changed into a tabulated format to improve readability, decrease scrolling, and to group lessons, videos and activities in a more compact format on the screen. The textbook has also been revised to include screenshots of the updated MS Office interface.

Trial implementation of a mobile device textbook app to improve accessibility for students.
Action Taken
The textbook app was not as popular as anticipated, so a mobile-friendly web version of the textbook is being considered in place of the app. Moodle has also updated to a tile interface to enhance the mobile device use experience.
