During the crisis or response phase of a natural disaster, decisions need to be made quickly and actions need to be targeted, with the focus on safety at all times. Having previously established good collaborative relationships between agencies and communities, disaster management professionals should be able to work effectively and precisely and be able to quickly mobilise resources as required. This unit focuses on crisis assessment and triage, responding to social and environmental situations, and developing clear chain of command communication strategies necessary in a disaster response situation. Students will learn how to make quick and effective decisions using available evidence and how to provide the leadership required in such situations.
