EDED20519 - Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (Postgraduate)

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) requires that all initial teacher education students possess personal literacy and numeracy competencies in the top 30 percent of the population. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) administers both the literacy and numeracy tests to assess whether initial teacher education students meet the requirements outlined by AITSL. This zero credit point unit will enable the tracking of your registration and completion of the tests for both literacy and numeracy. Full-time Master of Teaching students are required to attempt the literacy and numeracy tests in their first term of study. Part-time Master of Teaching students are required to attempt the literacy and numeracy tests in their first year of study. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

  2. Demonstrate personal numeracy skills in the top 30% of the population evidenced by a mark of 'Standard Achieved' on the numeracy test administered by ACER.

3.5 Initial teacher education graduates will possess levels of personal English language literacy and numeracy broadly equivalent to the top 30% of the population and/or possess high levels of Australian First Nations language proficiency.

a. The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) is the means of demonstrating that students have met the required standard of English language literacy and numeracy. In the case of First Nations language speakers, recognition of First Nations language proficiency by the relevant cultural authority is an acceptable alternative standard.

b. Students who are required to undertake the LANTITE are expected to attempt it before the end of the first year of their initial teacher education qualification.

c. Providers must support students’ access to the LANTITE and provide targeted assistance to those who need support to achieve the required standard before graduation. Providers must have an established process to confirm recognition of First Language proficiency.

d. Providers are also required to support those students who meet the First Nations language proficiency to develop their English literacy and numeracy skills.
