Unit Synopsis

The unit will introduce the laws of thermodynamics, energy, work, and heat transfer in liquids and gasses. You will learn how to analyse and solve problems on heat engines, refrigeration, heat pumps as well as Rankine and Brayton cycles. You will develop the capacity to work, learn, and communicate ethically and professionally, as individuals and in teams, to investigate, solve problems, prepare technical and laboratory reports, and evaluate uncertainties and the results of your work. In this unit, you must complete compulsory practical activities. Refer to the Engineering Undergraduate Course Moodle site for proposed dates.

Prerequisites: MATH11218 Applied Mathematics and ENEG11009 Fundamentals of Energy & Electricity.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Recommendation
There were only a few students attended the lecture/tutorials. Anyway, more question and queries will be sought for to make students understand the contents.
Action Taken
The student's attendance has decreased further, which is out of the control of the unit coordinator/lecturer. To help them understand the content, more questions were asked in class (by whoever was present physically or through Zoom).

The work taught was all over the place and more video resources would be beneficial
Recommendation
The teaching will be done on week-by-week basis and chapter-by-chapter basis to keep the contents focused way. Uploading of the weekly lecture and tutorial videos will be maintained.

Lecture and tutorial materials, as well as recorded lectures and tutorials, were uploaded to Moodle each week.

Students could not acquire the prescribed textbook.
Recommendation
The latest version of the textbook (9th edition) does not have any exercises at the back of the chapter, which is why the 8th edition was prescribed. It is really good as a textbook. Checks with the supplier should be made to see if the book is available in Australia for the next offering.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Analyse the flow and non-flow processes using tables of properties of fluids, P-v-T, P-v, and T-v diagrams
  2. Explain the first and second law of thermodynamics and their limitations
  3. Analyse the heat energy cycles for a variety of heat engine, refrigeration, and heat pump cycles
  4. Analyse Rankine and Brayton cycles including their T-s diagrams and practical applications
  5. Prepare technical and laboratory reports with a thorough evaluation of experimental uncertainties and results obtained in an ethical and professional manner both individually and in teams.
