Unit Synopsis

This unit provides a framework for improvements in resource management in industry, commerce and government. It emphasises pro-active approaches to resource management through the concepts of resource conservation, waste minimisation, cleaner production and pollution prevention. Its prime focus is on waste reduction, materials and energy recovery, and pollution prevention as alternatives to 'end of pipe' waste disposal and pollution control strategies. The unit provides a framework for sustainable waste management through planning and design, waste management and operational practices, resource recovery and reuse, treatment and ultimate disposal. The unit also considers the adoption of clean technologies and recovery of hazardous materials where environmental and health benefits can be achieved by economically and socially acceptable means. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

  2. demonstrate an understanding of the use of data in the identification of possible options for improved waste minimisation and its use as the basis for developing an EWP
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the processes and considerations required in the development of a Waste and Resource Recovery Management Plan
  4. understand how cost/benefit issues can be used to support the implementation of such a plan within an organisation.
