Unit Synopsis

The fundamentals of mathematics and physics are essential for your understanding of how aircraft and propulsion systems are designed and constructed, their principles of operation and their on-going maintenance. This unit covers the foundational mathematics and physics modules of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance basic knowledge requirements syllabus. In this unit, you will learn many mathematical concepts and physics fundamentals and build on your understanding by relating them to specific aviation examples. You will apply relevant mathematical and engineering physics concepts to explain the operation of aerospace vehicles and solve simple problems involved in the operation and maintenance of aerospace vehicles. This unit is delivered at Aviation Australia campuses by Aviation Australia staff in partnership with CQUniversity staff.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

  1. Apply fundamental mathematics to solve problems related to aerospace vehicles and their operation, including developing graphical representations using trigonometry
  2. Describe the nature and characteristics of matter at the atomic and molecular levels
  3. Explain foundational thermodynamic principles, including combustion engine cycles and their relative efficiencies and operation
  4. Discuss mechanics fundamentals, including statics, kinetics, dynamics and fluid dynamics in the context of aerospace vehicles and their operation
  5. Describe the nature of light, wave motion and sound.
