ENTA11017 - Electronic Fundamentals for Aircraft Structural Maintenance

General Information

Unit Synopsis

There is a wide variety of electronic equipment used within modern aircraft systems, for functions as diverse as instrumentation and critical engine monitoring through to in-flight entertainment. This unit covers the foundation knowledge of electronic devices to the extent required to perform structural maintenance of aircraft. In this unit, you will learn about the properties and behaviour of semiconductors, and a range of semiconductor devices such as diodes and transistors. You will learn how these devices are used to construct integrated circuits transistors and integrated circuits. You will learn about the uses of printed circuit boards and how servomechanisms are designed and used in aircraft. You will also develop skills in the maintenance of electronic systems, gaining hands-on practical experience with different types of components and system configurations. This unit is delivered at Aviation Australia campuses by Aviation Australia staff in partnership with CQUniversity staff.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Explain semiconductor theory and the function of diodes, rectifiers and transistors
  2. Discuss the use of printed circuit boards in electronic devices
  3. Explain the use of servomechanisms in aircraft
  4. Safely perform practical tasks and maintenance exercises using simulation equipment and aircraft electronic components and systems.
