ESSC12004 - Exercise and Sport Biomechanics

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is designed so that students should be able to explain the fundamental concepts of mechanics that are applicable to the study of human motion. Students will be introduced to basic principles of mechanics to assess and analyse human motion as it relates to the musculoskeletal system. This unit will introduce basic biomechanical equipment and measurement techniques to devise safe and effective fitness programs, improve athletes' performance, recognise and correct improper technique during physical activity, prevent injuries and regain physical fitness after injury. Note: All flexible enrolled students are required to attend a compulsory Exercise and Sport Biomechanics residential school to promote development of unit learning outcomes.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
There was mixed feedback on the online interactive tutorials. Some students found these very helpful. However, others found them to be confusing due to the different style to typical tutorials (i.e. video recording/PDF notes files). In addition, some students commented that the tutorials were more revision questions rather than tutorials that took them step by step through solving the problem.
Recommendation
The tutorials were offered via the Lt online learning platform and allowed students to work through questions at their own pace with hints/tips provided for the various steps as well as short video recordings of the individual question solutions. As this was a new platform for students to use, it is recommended that future offerings provide students with an initial 'Getting started' introduction to the platform and how to navigate the tutorials. In addition, providing 1-2 worked examples at the start of the tutorial followed by the questions for students to complete using the hints/tips.
Action Taken
In 2021, the tutorials were offered as interactive course presentation via the H5P platform embedded in Moodle. Students were provided information on how this platform worked; however, it took multiple post to orient students to the platform.

Feedback
Students tended to enjoy the Movement Analysis Presentation Assessment task but felt more examples were needed within lectures to support them in completing the tasks
Recommendation
It is recommend that lectures, tutorials, and practical activities be reviewed to examine how content can be modified to further support students in completing biomechanical movement analyses.
Action Taken
Content of the unit was revised to include additional examples within lectures. In addition the practical activities were modified to largely focus on data collection and analysis required for completing a biomechanical movement analysis.

Feedback
The lectures are long and a lot of content was covered in the first six weeks which overwhelmed students
Recommendation
Staff will review the lecture schedule to spread content over the twelve weeks of term. This will give students additional time to work through the content and balance the lecture length. Staff will also explore the opportunity to deliver some content as short video recordings which will further reduce the actual lecture length.

Feedback
Students enjoyed the practical activities as they can apply the theoretical concepts. However, students noted that more equipment was required adequately resource the activities and suggested the sessions be held earlier in term.
Recommendation
The practical activities will continue to provide students with hands-on experience to apply theoretical concepts. Staff will explore opportunity to purchase additional equipment or share resources across campuses. While staff will also explore opportunity to schedule the practical sessions earlier in the term, this may not be possible.
