ESSC12005 - Applied Exercise and Sport Physiology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will examine the application of physiological concepts and skills based on current trends in exercise and sport science settings. Furthermore, you will develop scientific knowledge and skills by undertaking an applied research project and disseminating the outcomes in verbal and written forms.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Portfolio 70%
2. Online Quiz(zes) 30%
3. On-campus Activity 0%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student feedback, peer consultation, and self-reflection.
Feedback
The assessment load is heavy towards the end of term for students, with similar assessment pieces administered in the form of a research manuscript and research presentation.
Recommendation
It is recommended that an alternative single assessment piece be developed and implemented linking elements of the research manuscript and research presentation as part of the wider research portfolio assessment.
Action Taken
It was decided to keep the research manuscript and presentation as separate assessment pieces to ensure specific elements of writing and presenting skills were assessed. However, the requirements in the research manuscript were reduced to lessen the assessment load toward the end of the term for students.
Source: Teaching staff feedback and self-reflection.
Feedback
Some equipment did not permit effective or efficient data collection for the research projects during practical tasks.
Recommendation
It is recommended that alternative equipment providing effective and efficient physiological measurement be incorporated into research projects during practical sessions.
Action Taken
Alternative equipment (e.g., mobile applications, heart rate monitors) was incorporated into research projects during practical sessions for more effective data collection.
Source: Self-reflection and student feedback via discussion.
Feedback
Some new original studies have been conducted on some topics covered in the practical research projects, making them less novel.
Recommendation
It is recommended that some topics covered in the practical research projects be altered to ensure originality.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: Self-reflection and student feedback via discussion.
Feedback
The presentation sessions were long and difficult to coordinate due to technical issues.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the presentation sessions be run across more frequent, shorter sessions.
Action Taken
Nil.
