Unit Synopsis

This unit builds on the student's understanding of health promotion by focusing on best practice strategies. These strategies will cover a range of circumstances and settings, including brief individual interventions to the development of national health promotion policy. It is recognised that effective health promotion initiatives generally use a combination of strategies and skills that are founded on theory and research.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites Students enrolled in CC59 Bachelor of Public Health (Specialisation) or CC4 Associate Degree in Public Health (Specialisation) are not permitted to enrol in this unit.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Improve the visual quality of recorded lectures as they appear fuzzy.
Recommendation
Provide directions for students in week 1 of the term on how to improve the visual quality of Echo 360 lecture videos.
Action Taken
This year, all lectures were re-recorded and replaced. In Week 1 of the term, instructions on improving the visual quality of lecture videos were provided.

Feedback
Many students lacked the skills and knowledge required to complete the final written assessment.
Recommendation
In preparation for their final written assessment, emphasise to students the importance of completing the unit learning materials, including weekly lectures and support sessions from weeks 6 to 10, from early in the term.
Action Taken
This year, the unit was condensed from 12 weeks of content and 12 lectures to five modules of content and five lectures. Students were advised which modules to review to complete each assessment task, including the online quizzes.

Feedback
Students are not grasping the basic concepts required to complete Assessment 3.
Recommendation
Add a note to the assessment description that all unit modules must be completed to understand the concepts covered in Assessment 3. Advise students that these modules have been condensed to allow faster completion.

Feedback
Students lack basic academic literacy skills, particularly in research and evidence-based discussion. This is despite the majority being in the second or third year of their course.
Recommendation
Provide students with the opportunity to review short academic literacy session recordings that cover research and writing skills from one of the first-year Public Health units (Foundations of Health).
