HRMT20025 - International Human Resource Management

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit critically examines the human resource functions, operations, policies, and practices pertaining to the transfer of employees across national borders for work purposes. The aim is to identify, analyse, and discuss the issues that human resource practitioners face when selecting, employing, and deploying staff in diverse organizational, cultural, and national contexts. This is an advanced unit that applies and builds upon the knowledge acquired in the foundation unit - Managing Human Resources. This unit equips students with the skills needed to effectively manage human resources in international business environments across countries.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
NO teamwork in the ULOs but currently teamwork is in Assessment task 2.
Recommendation
Consider changing ULOs as there should be teamwork in the ULOs but currently, teamwork is not in the ULOs. The new Unit Lead might need to submit UUP for this unit.
Action Taken
Revised through UUP. SUMMARISE THE PROPOSED CHANGE A) Minor changes to the wording of the unit overview. No major change to the contents or purposes of the unit. B) Remove one learning outcome and change the wording of all of the LOs slightly. C) Changes the assessment types and the number of assessments from 3 assessments to 2 assessments as noted below: 1. Essay (20%) ->remove 2. Group Work Weighting: (40%) -> Change to Presentation (50%) (Group) 3. Written Assessment (40%) -> Change to Report (50%) (Individual) D) Due the the above changes, the ULO mapping to assessments also changed.

Feedback
Assessments 1 and 3 and potential AI writing.
Recommendation
Assessments 1 and 3 would need to be modified to make them more authentic to reduce AI writing. This has been discussed with the 2024 Unit Lead.
Action Taken
To address AI writing issues in Assessments 1 and 3, we have made key modifications. The unit overview has been simplified for broader clarity, while the learning outcomes have been refined, with one outcome removed and integrated into others. We are reducing the number of assessments from three to two: a Group Presentation (50%) involving oral presentations and Q&A, designed to limit AI use, and an individual 2000-word Report (50%) analyzing International Human Resources practices, ensuring academic integrity with citations from the last three years. These changes will be reflected in the updated ULO mapping to better align with the revised assessments and learning outcomes.

Old edition of the textbook
Recommendation
A newer edition of the textbook should be adopted in 2024 and all teaching materials should be fully updated including lecture recordings. This has been discussed with the 2024 Unit Lead.
Action Taken
We have adopted the latest edition of the textbook, International Human Resource Management (8th Edition, 2023) by Peter Dowling, Marion Festing, and Allen D. Engle, ensuring that all teaching materials are fully updated. This includes revising lecture recordings to align with the new edition. These updates have been discussed with the 2024 Unit Lead to enhance the unit's relevance and effectiveness.

Feedback
Simplify content delivery and enhance coordination
Recommendation
Simplify Content Delivery: Tailor lectures and workshops to accommodate non-business students by breaking down complex concepts into more accessible language and using relatable examples. Ensure consistent communication and support throughout the term, offering additional resources and guidance to help students from diverse academic backgrounds better grasp the material. Finally, to improve HRMT20025 for future terms, simplify lectures and workshops to better support non-business students by using clearer language and relatable examples.
