Unit Synopsis
Legal systems are designed to assess and regulate the impact of risk from different sources including legal, financial, social and interpersonal risks. Legal professionals are skilled at analysing risks and developing systems that regulate and manage risk. In this unit you will apply legal problem solving skills in a practical context which may include a workplace environment you arrange, a community engagement project, a government inquiry, an international study experience, or within the university research and learning community. In this context you will critically analyse the legal and regulatory environment, develop a practical solution to risk management and reflect on the process of implementation. This unit will consolidate your existing legal knowledge in your chosen field of investigation and synthesize technical approaches to the design and evaluation of regulatory systems. Your outcomes may include the design of policy and procedures to assure legal compliance, development of training resources or the creation of an interactive simulation using authentic data and regulatory frameworks.

Enrolment in CH75 Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Clear application to real world issues, directly relevant to many legal careers, useful exercises in deeply understanding theoretical applications
The unit will continue to be refined and updated to encompass more of the d-thinking and systems thinking elements as part of the ongoing improvement process.
The unit was updated in relation to dthinking components in 2019 although a more comprehensive update is required. The Law Dean is writing a text in relation to dthinking which will support a thorough rewrite and update of the content in this unit to support the unit development process if offered in future.

"The lecturer is very outstanding, and the idea behind risk management is interesting [but] I think the concept is really difficult to understand. I know I struggled with the concepts and so did the other students."
Continue approachable and enthusiastic teaching style however the unit needs simplification and a rewrite to update and provide more comprehensive materials for the students.
