General Information

Unit Synopsis

Intermediate Mathematics for University is designed to follow on from a study of introductory mathematical concepts, such as Fundamental Mathematics for University, preparing you for Technical Mathematics for University and/or undergraduate courses requiring an intermediate level of mathematics. You will complete core and elective modules, chosen according to your future study plans, including simultaneous equations; inequalities and absolute values; quadratic equations; logarithms; functions; geometry; trigonometry; variation, ratio, and proportion; sequences and series; statistics and standard deviation; probability; financial mathematics; and annuities.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Non-award unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 50%
2. Take Home Exam 50%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student comment
Feedback
The notes made on assessments were clear and easy to follow for correction also.
Recommendation
Maintain the level of feedback to students on module review tests.
Action Taken
The teaching team recognise the value in providing good feedback to students and while the number of module reviews has decreased in number, all modules are tested through in-term assessment and the level of feedback will be and has been maintained.
Source: Student and staff comments
Feedback
Extend some of the module example videos a little; they occasionally felt rushed, but were mostly well paced.
Recommendation
Maintain use of the video resources but enhance their quality and number to assist with difficult concepts.
Action Taken
A recorded video lecture series has been added to the video resources on the moodle site and new videos are always under production to remedy any errors or technical problems.
Source: Staff comment
Feedback
The length of time available for the Take Home Examination and the size of the exam document have presented issues for students and staff.
Recommendation
Seek ways to reduce the number of upload issues associated with offering the Take Home Examination.
Action Taken
The exam paper has been reformatted to provide students with optional questions. This means that the exam document can be potentially shortened. This new format was tested in T1 2022 and proved successful with the online student group.

Feedback
Video resources for some modules in the unit need re-recording.
Recommendation
Seek ways to improve current video resources for student use and supplement with recordings produced by other staff.
Action Taken
Nil.

Feedback
Additional Zoom sessions delivered by staff were very helpful.
Recommendation
Maintain support for students through Zoom sessions as scheduled or as needed.

Feedback
Optional questions in Section B of the Take Home Examination have enhanced flexibility for students.
Recommendation
Continue with the current format of the Take Home Examination to provide greater flexibility in completion and upload.
