General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces you to the childbearing continuum and the role of the midwife in promoting and facilitating healthy processes. You will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the underpinning philosophy of midwifery care which emphasises the concepts of ‘with woman’, midwife-woman partnerships, and continuity of care.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Some students were displeased with the format of assessment 2 - the oral examination/VIVA, stating that this is not a means in which they are comfortable to be assessed.
Recommendation
The format of the examination must remain the same, however, the assessments for this unit remain varied. Students have been provided with a comprehensive interactive feedback session at a residential school, where they had the opportunity to engage with the teaching staff without limitation regarding general performance advice for the oral examinations.
Action Taken
Routine oral exam preparation activities were provided, including an online Zoom session, and the provision of a "mock" exam video. Additionally, a CQU learning designer was consulted to explore ways the assessment might be altered to enhance student satisfaction. Accordingly, an open-book standard for oral exams has been adopted across the Bachelor of Midwifery to enable the students to utilise print materials during the examination. Previously, students were not able to utilise any materials during the examination. It is hypothesised that this will increase student confidence and satisfaction with this assessment.

Feedback
Regarding having suggestions for improvement, a student wrote "I don't actually [have suggestions], I find this subject one of the most interesting and well-structured courses I have done, plenty of supporting information, relevant additional readings and good course content. [I am] thoroughly enjoying it!"
Recommendation
The unit coordinator will maintain the current structure of the unit, ensuring that study guides, lectures, and supplementary materials are reviewed and updated every year to maintain the current standard.

A student provided written feedback that they found one of the guest lectures to have used some "judgmental" language.
Recommendation
In consultation with the Bachelor of Midwifery academic staff, the unit coordinator will review the lecture and will make amendments if this is found to be an issue.
