MEDI11005 - Patient Care in the Allied Health Professions

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with the foundation knowledge and skills that you will need to provide safe and effective patient care as a student health practitioner. You will be introduced to medico-legal and ethical responsibilities of a medical radiation practitioner. You will be able to integrate the physical, mental and psychosocial aspects of care to provide a holistic approach to interacting with and caring for patients. You will be able to apply infection control and manual handling techniques and conduct basic patient assessments. You will be introduced to common medical emergencies that may occur in the medical imaging clinical environment.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Continue with two timetabled options of residential schools if enrollment numbers remain high.

Multiple small-enrolment res schools were run to comply with Covid-save requirements and to address travel restrictions for interstate students.

The graded assessment tasks used up to 2019 were almost exclusively focused on recall of knowledge.
Recommendation
Review graded assessment task questions to ensure inclusion of questions that focus on application to clinical practice to more clearly align with the unit learning outcomes.

More application-level assessment questions were included in the final assessment.

Feedback
Students appreciated residential school focusing entirely on practical skills. In previous years there had also been a theory test as well as hands-on activities at the residential school.
Recommendation
Continue to hold on-line theory assessments separate to residential school.

Some students did not feel that they used a significant portion of the prescribed text for this unit. The text is also used in upper level units but students were not necessarily aware of that.
Recommendation
Investigate the feasibility of replacing the required text with other online resources, taking into account the use of the text in other units.

Feedback
Many students found the tutorials informative, including those who used the recordings rather than participating in live sessions. Some commented that the recordings included only the structured tutorial content, not questions that students asked at the end of the session.
Recommendation
Continue to record online tutorials, ensuring that the recordings capture both the formal and informal segments of the sessions.

  1. Discuss the medicolegal aspects of practice of a diagnostic radiographer.
  2. Apply best practices in infection control procedures and manual handling.
  3. Employ communication strategies that are empathetic, effective and tailored to the patient’s circumstances.
  4. Respond within your scope of practice to changes in a patient’s condition.
  5. Discuss basic concepts of pharmacokinetics and drug administration.
